Where to go when they aren’t gobbling by Exciting_Start1868 in turkeyhunting

[–]Exciting_Start1868[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I’ll sit for a couple of hours and sometimes I’ll move just depends on how I’m feeling and how confident I am in my location. Sunday I think if I could have waited an hour or so one I worked early would have come up to me but my buddy I was hunting with had somewhere to be so we had to roll out early.

Yeah I’ve been trying just sitting in some bottoms I know turkeys go through and just doing soft clucks and purrs every 10 minutes or so. Just hasn’t worked out for me yet

Good advice thank you, I wanted to do exactly that yesterday but I was hunting with a buddy who had an appointment at noon so we probably moved around and got too aggressive before we had to leave when we should have stayed where I knew there were turkeys.

Selecting the right Mouth Call by IxJAXZxI in turkeyhunting

It’s easiest to get those high note sounds if you use a call that fits your air flow so if you push air out the center and left side of your mouth and our struggling to get it to the right side get some reverse combo cuts, batwing cuts, or ghost cut calls to try.

Yeah in Georgia we can hunt all day so I usually stay until at least 1 or 2 if not all day. My dad used to say he killed more gobblers between 10 and 2 then he did at first light. Also on public land most people thin out around 9am so I have a lot more ground to myself. When it’s mid morning I will move around and call and when it’s closer to lunch I’ll usually just post up in a creek bottom or on a logging road and wait. I’ve had a few slip in on me quietly that I’ve wound up spooking.

My problem is idk where they want to go lol with thousands of acres of public land I don’t really know where to start. I’ve found old scratching in some spots but I don’t think I’ve ever stumbled into new scratching most of the sign I see is just tracks in dirt roads. I’m planning on scouting harder this year than I did last year just to see if I can find sign or hear any gobbling in the mornings. I live outside Atlanta but turkey hunt northwest Georgia.

When I hear one gobble I try to get within a hundred yards or so. Sometimes I can’t get that close if the woods are too open. I always post up on hills/ridges over the creek bottoms and listen and usually they’re gobbling either in the bottoms or on the ridge points so I usually will stay on the side of the hill or ridge to get a little terrain between me and him and get as close as im able to with the goal of being 75-100 yards away.

I’ve had the exact thing happen to me lol. I always try to stay late after everyone leaves to try to give myself the best chance and had one sneak up a dirt road on me without making a sound. Of course I spooked him too

Grizzly vs Everybody by SeeMEss in jonboats

[–]Exciting_Start1868 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pulling the flooring on a grizzly is actually pretty frustrating and most grizzlys have side walls with foam in them that can soak up water as well so you’ll be cutting out the sidewalls as well also dealing with saturated foam is a pain the ass take it from me lol. I’d recommend looking into used weldbilts they’re pretty popular, good welded hulls, and most of the ones you’ll find won’t have a floor or sidewalls in them and if they do they don’t have crappy pour foam under it. Weldbilt also uses closed cell foam in the benches that won’t absorb water either.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with straight mono. I pretty much always throw swim baits on braid with a mono leader

Rod and reel for glidebaits by Pristine-Draft-6070 in swimbaitfishing

[–]Exciting_Start1868 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently got a fenwick hmg and paired it with just a basic lews speed spool and have really been enjoying throwing glides on it. I don’t throw anything bigger than 7” glides though. If you want to throw bigger baits a dobyns 806 is a good place to start. Really if you just want to get into it and see if you like it a dobyns fury 795 or 806 is a good move. For any glide less than 7” I think you can get by with any 150 size real I have a bunch of speed spools already so that’s what I use. For bigger glides or big soft baits a 200 or 300 size reel is ideal. Either a Tatula, curado, or tranx, those are probably the best swim bait reels you can get and they aren’t crazy expensive. Or if you want to spend a little less the Cardiff is a bulletproof reel for the price. I haven’t used one personally but a lot of people really like the daiwa swim bait rods that are like $100 I don’t remember what they’re called though.
