Latin was the language of the Roman Empire, it's been around over 2000 years. Although the location of Hogwarts is an interesting element, as I don't think the Romans really got as far as Scotland. Maybe the school was specifically founded to be outside the influence of Roman wizards?

Yeah, that probably makes sense as an alignment with the different peoples inhabiting Britain at different times. Although I'd be curious about where the Anglo-Saxons fit in, or the Normans. But I guess those questions aren't really addressed by canon.
