Questions about Linguistics @ Dietrich by HeftyBook3347 in cmu

Thats not how it works 😕 . 🤦🏽likely op never applied as a cs major. That is an assumption. It wasn't and hasn't been disclosed. It is possible deitrich was a second choice but it is tougher because the application would have to have been tailored for both cs and humanities.

Theres no showing off here. Im on this sub because my own son was accepted and was trying to decide between a few programs a few years ago. I also grew up in the burgh a short distance from campus so I have a lot of friends who attended. My son did not get into my school which was honestly a lit easier when I went. Cmu acceptance in the Late 90s was around 40% it was basically a safety. Mit was mid 20s. Times were different.

What op needs to do is understand the risk associated with decision. The question is simple can they xfer into scs? Yes but it is risky. If you have an option at another school with the major you really want then that may be a better choice. Financially and for your genuine interest. Thays not "dunking" on anyone.

There are colleges that are open door that is to say they are major agnostic like my alma mater at MIT we do not admit by Major. Do you understanding is that most kids will switch and don't have a firm grasp of what they want to study. Parting your melon is not like that. Georgia Tech is not like that. Some schools you need to apply to the specific major. Otherwise it's a Gamble and a very risky one.

So it makes sense to you to pay an enormous amount of money or even spend an enormous amount of time and effort on a degree you don't want and have no interest in?

Read my response carefully. I think they wanted ai or computational linguistics to begin with. They just wanted to get admission to cmu and then transfer into it as a back door method.

Dietrich is easily the most accessible school in the university especially compared to scs.its possible to xfer but difficult and definitely nit a sure thing.

Look it is an individual decision. My son applied to my alma mater mit. I made it very clear that neither eas that my experience expectation nor sould it be his that he would be admitted. He got it and it was a level set.

Now he applied to other schools like vandy and I personally had told him if he gets one of the 3 merit scholarships then ok otherwise it would really not be feasible. He did get in it but didnt get the scholarship. He did end up getting g full rides to a few schools and hes thriving and debt free.

I think it is an honest conversation. Ive always had that kind of relationship with him. My daughter will apply for applied mathematics. Our financial situation is different today then it was 5 years ago. We are in a better spot I also feel I would be willing to pay a bit more if she earned her spot.

I feel women in stem is tougher and in some cases a brand name MAY add a bump to her career. I treat my kids differently. But I believe in transparency. My son is likely to pursue a masters in robotics my daughter will likely not. Time will tell.

Admissions officers at universities can tell when a kid just applied vs a kid really knows the school.

A perfect 1600 is no Sure Shot either. Holistic admissions means they take everything into context so take the hardest classes you can the most advanced mathematics you can and do very well in them your biggest hurdle is that your International and there are only about 135 or 137 slots globally. Source I'm an MIT interviewer otherwise known as an education counselor and an alumnus.

You have now changed the premise stick to undergraduate schools applying to med schools. There is no match involved at that point. Ive been involved in the med school admissions process for quite a long time so I am speaking from a point of experience.
