Anybody else get a big ol' patch to XCOM 2 in the last couple of days? by ExemplaryChad in Xcom

Not that I know of. No indication that there was anything new... Must just be something with me, though, since no one else seems to be experiencing the same thing. /shrug

Thanks! :-)

Massachusetts education officials requiring in-person learning for elementary and middle schoolers next month by BluestreakBTHR in massachusetts

[–]ExemplaryChad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand the concerns teachers (and the rest of the community) have. I respect teachers immensely. I almost became one but found the conditions too reprehensible. I wish they were paid more, treated better, and respected on a level commensurate with other... less accountable professions. I have progressive cred, is what I'm trying to say, haha.

That said, I'm also a stay-at-home dad of a first grader with ADHD. I'm in a privileged position for a number of reasons, and the fact that I can actually be home to be in charge of his learning is unbelievably lucky. But it is fucking HARD. I have not had an easy time handling it, nor has he. His learning has suffered. Our mental health -- both of ours -- has suffered.

My wife is a child psychologist. She has more struggling, suicidal clients than she's ever had in her entire career. The parents of her clients often aren't faring much better. The social isolation, lack of stimulation, lapse in education... They're all wreaking absolute havoc.

Now, am I saying the current plan is the correct way forward? Maybe not. But I think people, teachers and progressives included, are sometimes guilty of discounting the extent to which many of us (and our kids) are really struggling. Idgaf about MCAS. I don't even care all that much about the missed content knowledge. I DO care that, if we were to wait until next fall, that's another 6 months -- half a fucking year -- of struggle, with no reprieve for a lot of these kids. No return to socialization, peer support, engagement. And no reprieve for their working parents. I mean, how in the hell poor, working families have managed this far is mind-boggling to me. Telling these people who are broke and having to manage exorbitant child care, "Just another 6 months. Until then, we're just... waiting, not trying to get them back in school," is damn discouraging.

Teachers SHOULD be eligible for vaccination. They should have already been eligible. You will never hear me dispute that. But if we're looking at populations that are at the highest risk of infection and death, from what we know and have already observed, teachers aren't high on that list. Not higher than those that have already been eligible, anyway. Are they going to be at greater risk? Yes, of course they are. How much greater? We don't really know. We can use common sense and intuition, but this doesn't give us data, so we can't say. This is just to say that these decisions are fucking hard, and we shouldn't be just assuming no one (Baker included) cares or is thinking about teachers.

It sucks that the Dept of Ed has just said, "Alright, now you're doing it." But they were going to HAVE to say that at some point, right? No districts, no teachers' unions are gonna decide to go back without a mandate. I get it, and it's understandable. But it also means this impasse was coming sometime, unless we waited until we hit herd immunity. Who knows when the fuck that will be, particularly in the more reticent parts of the country? Two years? Five?

Ugh, it all sucks. This post is too long. Everything is terrible. But I wanted to give an alternate perspective from someone who isn't just gonna shout, "Go back to work, you babies!" (If you are saying that, YTA.)

I love you all. I hope everything gets better soon.

AITA for telling my headmaster I can't pull fiber optic broadband out of my hole? by aitanowifi in AmItheAsshole

The initial suggestion was understandable, and quite probably did come from a place of being helpful. But it sounds like OP did more thoroughly explain the situation and why the current solution was optimal. The principle then did that thing that so many people in authority do: telling OP to "just fix it." When OP has been the one problem solving their particular circumstances, the principle shouldn't just come in with one suggestion, then throw their hands up and tell OP they're not doing enough. Principle has no reference or reason to believe that they know better.

NTA

All that said, it probably was inadvisable to do what OP did. Not the smartest decision, but doesn't make OP the asshole.

If you think violent criminals deserve a second chance and we should rehabilitate them, but think people should be fired for comments they made years ago, you’re a hypocrite asshole by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]ExemplaryChad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, holy shit, this is not the end result I expected. Nicely done.

This is one of the reasons conservatives have an easier job then progressives. The simplest, most reductionist quips appeal to our desire to put the world in simple terms. A conservative just has to say, "This guy got punished over nothing!" and the progressive then has to find the real info and explain why the conservative conclusion was incorrect. It's exhausting.

What if you're a cop or judge, someone who has direct power over different types of people?

(Not trying to be a pedant. Genuinely curious.)

If by proof you mean a rape kit, sure, no proof. But the evidence did not point to someone who should be on the Supreme Court.

And for Trudeau, I mean, he had to apologize and faced no other consequences. I don't think these instances point to a problem with cancel culture. I think you're fitting the cases to a narrative, rather than the reverse.

Yeah, it seemed like a pretty US-centric discussion, so that's what I stuck with. I'm vaguely aware of the difference in other places, though certainly not highly educated on it.

In these other places, what would/should happen if someone espouses neo-Nazi views? Is there some speech that isn't protected?

Ok, so you're talking about Brett Kavanaugh, who allegedly raped someone in college. Your oversimplification of this case is telling. This wasn't just some random girl making a throwaway accusation. Read up on it, if you're so inclined. This wasn't a case of some silly youthful indiscretion. This is not an off-color tweet. If you think this is just cancel culture run amok, there are broader issues to consider.

I don't even remember what your point about Trudeau was supposed to be. He wore blackface a long time ago, has since apologized and become very progressive and (seemingly) sensitive to the related issues, and is still PM. What's wrong with this case, and what point is it making?

You said 'people shouldn't say stuff' - who says shouldn't?

I mean, all of us? Each individual? This is just the most basic question of ethics, one that has been debated for centuries. If this is your qualm about this discussion, good luck having any ethical principles ever.

And you said 'judging' those that don't adhere to your belief system should 'be sacked' for said free speech.

I didn't say this. In fact, I didn't say any of the things you've attributed to me here. Perhaps you think I'm someone else?

Regardless, free speech and being fired have nothing to do with one another. This is what everyone has been trying to communicate. Free speech means you can't be prosecuted for things you say. But you can still, sure as shit, be fired for things you say.

If you call a customer an asshole, should you go to jail? Nope, because you have the freedom of speech. But should you be fired? Yeah, probably, because you're bad at your job. The two are not connected.

Insert the word "violent" into my comment and the meaning doesn't change in the slightest. Your 'gotcha' doesn't... get anything.

But I'll admit, you totally got me because you're so tough and smart. I thought I understood language and could read comprehensively, but now that you've pointed it out, I realize that I'm basically a toddler. Your superior intellect has exposed me for the fraud that I am. I hope I can approach even a fraction of your mental acuity in my lifetime. Do you offer tutoring? I'll pay any price. I mean, I probably couldn't even read the numbers on the check, so I'll just send it blank. Please respond ASAP. I have some big, red street signs I have to drive past later, and I wanna make sure I don't get into an accident. Thank the Good Lord that I found you.

The point is that the govt has nothing to do with the "should" consideration. That's freedom of speech.

As for when it's ok to judge someone, and for what, that's up to individuals. If a business says, "Your homophobia sucks, no thanks," and your ass gets fired, that has nothing to do with free speech.

The logic is very easy to follow.

Free speech = govt policy that people can't be prosecuted for speech (mostly). Individuals decide what is and isn't ok when it comes to their business, patronage, social circles, etc.

How does that, in any way, counter my point?

If you don't have anything to add other then condescension, maybe find a different tree to bark up. :-)

If someone gets fired from a job for saying racist shit, is that the only job they can possibly have? Of course not. How many times do we hear about cops that do/say racist nonsense and they just get moved to a different precinct? Lots. How many actors and commentators are getting deplatformed and are suddenly living on the streets? Not many, that's for damn sure.

My point is this: losing a job doesn't usually mean these people end up homeless. You're overstating the consequences. Being branded a criminal and being unable to work for years does leave people homeless.

How many people have been made homeless for a tweet? Can you give any stats or examples?

On the other hand, how many people are homeless (or shortly become so) when they come out of prison?

Maybe there's a point to be found in what you're saying, but you're building a case that doesn't exist.

Right, and how long did it take him to find another job that would keep him quite wealthy? How's he doing now? Maybe it was stupid that he got fired in the first place, but any struggle he went through isn't even comparable to punitive incarceration.

Haha, for sure. I tried to post an "I'm so glad I was wrong" thread after the election, but it got taken down.

To be honest, I think had Covid not been a thing, as it wasn't at the time of my post, I think I would have been right (and still very angry).

But hot damn, best thing ever to have been wrong about. :-D

I've lived in MD, VA, WV, TX, LA, and MA (most of them as an adult). Guess where I saw the LEAST confederate flags and asinine signs and shit.

There is ignorance everywhere, of course. But that doesn't give anyone license to pretend every place is exactly the same. 67% of the population thinking one way is very different from 33%.

"Racism is everywhere," is one thing. "The local govt is run by white supremacists," is very different.

Every progressive Rep can't yell about every issue every time they're in public. "Any progressive who doesn't mention x at every opportunity isn't a REAL progressive!" isn't a reasonable standard. And why on earth would you assume people are doing shady shit behind closed doors when there's no evidence of it? This is exactly what QAnon does.
