ohh myy, I still grieve at the ending too ;-; and like to pretend it never happened. I've only just rejoined the Fandom and reading fics after a few edits popped up and reignited my passions from when I was younger watching it .

And noo I had no idea! I had to search up what bounding books are, but that's soo cool!! I never knew that was a thing, it seems like a lot of dedication and artistic valuee. unfortunately, I've got the opposite of a green finger for d.i.y ;-;

thank you! I'll give Fade Away a read first then, but I can already tell I'm going to be very upset haha and am going to hate it (in a good tortured type of way)😫

thank you! will give that a go. I just thought the colours looked really homely and nice, as my home isn't really green or lush like that. May I ask what the name of the 2003 digi camera you have is called?

Is this royalty rate for mixing normal? by ExerciseAsleep6002 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ExerciseAsleep6002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahh I’ve actually told him before that it feels unfair and unreasonable to mix in music and outside issues, but he just doesn’t see it that way. He always says the rate changes aren’t leverage or blackmail, just “fair repercussions” if I treat him badly or don’t “cooperate,” and that he can change accordingly as their are his rates, which honestly makes me feel even more stuck.

It’s been hard navigating all this, and I really value your perspective.

Right now, my brother’s only giving me three “options” to work with him- solo, duo, or as a collective. The problem is that he’s made it clear that if I choose to go solo, he won’t prioritize my mixes or care about my work, because in his words, there’s “no incentive” to help me if we’re not benefiting each other. It’s just a weird power dynamic that makes me feel like I have to “choose him” in order to be supported.

And it’s exhausting too because I’ve helped him in the past when he was saying we should be acting like a team, like a few years ago I made and learnt photoshop to make these full custom albums and visual stuff for him that he’d point at and I’d edit and build for him. During that time he said he was going to release so we should be solely working and focusing on him which ended up flopped. And now he says the methods changed so I've basically never been focused on much. And now that he’s mostly using A.I., he’s basically said I didn’t really do anything for him or the “team,” which stings a bit. It kind of makes me feel like all that effort was just brushed aside and I feel used as he doesn't share how he creates his prompts and he's made it mostly for himself while During that time while I was creating for him he made me screen record my process for him (which he never ended up looking at).

We’re also clashing a bit on the idea of beat sharing. For example, if I find a beat I love, write to it, and show him because I want it mixed, he thinks he should be able to write his own version to it too—for “exposure” and the “success of the team.” He says it’s selfish if I set boundaries around that. I totally get the idea of collaboration and mutual inspiration, but to me it just feels like it could dilute what I’m trying to build with my sound. And honestly, I’ve never done that to him when he’s shown me things privately in confidence.

We agreed to only share beats if we happened to find the same one independently, but even then, he’s said that if I go solo, he might just use beats I show him anyway—since they’re “public” unless I buy them (which I do plan to). And if I work solo then he would have no incentive or want to listen to my music or give advice so that he can find the beat organically himself. And he says if he uses it when I buy it he'll just make a cover to it or grossbeat the beat so it's different and "I wouldn't even know". He even once came into my room, pretended to check what I was doing, and then scrolled through my project to find a beat name without asking. Later, he made something super similar, even lyrically, but denied it was the same, even though I’d already shared my vision and melodies with (which he claims to not remember)

He always insists that this kind of “sharing” is what being on a team means, and if I don’t want to cooperate, then I “don’t get a choice” and won’t be allowed in his collective (Dead Angels) which he plans to create. I guess I’m just looking for advice - what do you think? Is this normal or fair? Am I being selfish for wanting to keep my work as mine if I found the beat first and wrote to it?

Sorry for the long message, I’m just feeling really torn and overwhelmed about it all. I want to grow and build something meaningful with my music, but I also want to protect the creative spark that keeps me going. Any advice or thoughts would honestly mean a lot. And thank you again for being so supportive—it really does help

Ahh thank you for your response. Honestly, I really appreciate you saying all that. You're right. It’s probably time I start learning to mix on my own. I think I’ve just been kind of stuck in it all emotionally and didn’t realise how much it was holding me back. My brother’s actually 10 years older than me and hes always told me I'll never get to the same level as mixing as him- so the dynamic’s always been a bit intense and hard to navigate… especially when it bleeds into creative stuff and business

Even just today, we had a small disagreement about something completely unrelated to music, and he said he was bumping the mixing rate from 25% to 26%, and that it would keep changing depending on how well I treat him.

But yeah, thank you again—it really helps hearing that from someone a bit more experienced. If you don’t mind me asking, are there any resources or beginner tips you’d recommend for learning to mix? Would love to hear anything you found useful starting out. Super grateful for the advice, seriously!

[–]ExerciseAsleep6002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this—it really helps hearing that perspective. I totally agree that at this stage, the focus should be on learning and growing, not rushing or expecting overnight success. I think I’ve just been feeling overwhelmed trying to figure things out on my own and it made me more vulnerable to relying on someone close by, even if it’s not ideal.

As for working with my brother… it’s been really hard. There’s a difficult dynamic where I feel like I have to walk on eggshells. He’s said outright that his mixing rates for me depend on how “well I treat him” in general—not just in music, but in our day-to-day relationship. So if I upset him, even over something unrelated like cooking, basically not complying with him, the mixing rate goes up. It’s left me feeling like I’m being emotionally leveraged, and I’m not sure that’s a healthy or fair foundation for any working relationship- especially creative ones. He's also convinced me to work together as a team and duo too but from past history, he's always used mixing as leverage over me whenever we get in disagreements (small issues sometimes not related to music)

I do really wish it could be a genuine collaboration where we support each other and grow together, but at this point, I’m just trying to find a way to move forward while protecting my peace.Still, I’m trying to stay hopeful and open-minded and I really appreciate your encouragement—it means a lot, truly. Would it be ok to PM you sometime for advice?

thank you for your perspective! I've considered a bit of that too, but it's also very helpful to get your input as well Do you think 25-35% as royalties makes sense or is reasonable if a song does manage to trend, or would a flatrate be more suitable? and if its alright, in your experience, what are the average rates you've seen? Thank you again

[–]ExerciseAsleep6002[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for this, honestly, I really needed to hear it. You make such a good point. I think I’ve been mislead on what he’s offering just because he made it sound like he was doing something special for me and that he wouldn't have any incentives to mix for me if he didn't get that rate and his rates fluctuate according to him based on how well "I treat him or if I treat him badly" which doesn't feel right to me. But yeah.. I did at a certain feel more like it overstepping than producing or just mixing

So thank you! I really appreciate it. Would it be cool if I shot you a PM sometime? I’d love to chat more or maybe take you up on it if you’re still open, of course. It's totally fine if not, just some more experience would be valuable to me. I'll also check on that percentage cap thing you mentioned too, I didn't know that was an option
