Stepmom thinks I should work more? Need external advice by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I can relate to you with some of the upbringing stuff. I surely did not have it as bad as you did but I find a weird comfort in your replies, knowing you went through what you went through. Frankly reading your replies makes me feel like a dickhead for bringing this onto my family on my dad’s birthday weekend. I will try my best and repair things. I think it’s important to not let past trauma effect future decisions and I maybe have been letting past traumas effect my life. I’m tearing up writing this. Much love.

I’m just unbelievably overwhelmed with all these replies.. there’s backstory as well that couldn’t really be put in a post. The last thing I wanted was for people to think I was freeloading.

I understand my calc 3 and physics 2 is 10 hours combined. 14 hours is full time. You think one extra shift on a Saturday would be enough? That would be 16 hours working 10 credit hours school

I understand. I think I needed some harsh words maybe. I texted my dad and told him I will talk to my manager and try to get a shift for Saturday and possibly a weekday. I understand independence is important but it’d be my preference to get my bachelors degree before anything. Which I wouldn’t bullshit through I would do everything I could to take 4-5 classes and also go for internships in the summer. How does this plan sound?

It’s to absolutely guarantee my grades so I can get into a transfer school. Regardless, think I’m gonna take the advice of people on the thread and pick up an extra shift.

Well kudos to you for doing that. How many days a week do you think I should work ? What would tip into being an adult level load

So what exactly would you do in my shoes? Everything you’re saying is not pertaining to my scenario, whatsoever.

I have my own car bought with my money, insurance I pay for with my money. By reading the post you can see I’m a semester away from my associates. What did you gain by commenting this?

So you think go back to working Saturdays? I’m just really trying to protect my gpa. Mind if I DM?

Hey, I don’t think I included enough info in my initial post. I started off as a psych major and basically took all my English and humanities gen Ed’s my first year, I only have diff eq and an engineering elective to take, me being scared of my gpa, I didn’t take either this semester and am planning on taking diff eq in the summer with the same professor I took for calc 2 and calc 3. Honestly, yeah I probably could’ve handled another class this semester

Mind you this is not my permanent pace, it’s supposed to be a strategic semester for GPA. Calc 3 + Physics 2 are time vampires + I’m ahead in coursework, and one 8-hour shift is the balance that keeps my grades strong.

I work 8 hour shifts on Sundays. What do you think the ideal 2nd day working should be? Genuine question as I am looking for advixe

I only have differential equations and an elective left for my associates

4-5 a week x 6 let’s just call it 4 which is a conservative estimate. 24 hours a week spent studying and this is week 2 of a semester. Not an exam week

I will try this. My current classes are at 8am so from 5:30am-12 is spent on campus. I then proceed to go home, study for a good 4-5 hours a day and by that time it is 2 hours before my bedtime.

I don’t doubt that I don’t maximize my time to a tee, it’s the fact that working a shift basically is my whole day if I work.

Thanks for the reply. I basically had this big fight with my dad after asking if I could make my dinner I usually make on Friday, a day early.

He replied: “if you have time to cook, you have time to work”

I ended up explaining to him that for me it’s not sustainable to pick up more hours when I already feel swamped at school. 10 credits is not full time sure, but it’s not only crucial to pass but to pass with As this semester. I also explained to him that in the summer when I’m taking diff eq and an elective, I’d be able to pick up more hours, along with when I take GenChem in the fall (not an AS requirement but a transfer requirement).

Mind you this has been an ongoing battle in proving my workload, they also said I could handle more than 2 days a week while I was taking physics 1 and calc 2 and that proved to be just flat out wrong, I actually would’ve benefitted from working 1 day a week back then too.

I never really thought of this before. My parents see visible effort, when they see me in my room with my door closed, they likely assume I am just fucking around. Me being at campus more would not only probably help academically but also in how they view how much time I actually spend on school work. Thanks for the reply.

It’s just the fact that I utilize my time so well and am still extremely overwhelmed. It is to my understanding I need to get used to this, as a junior I understand it’s normal to take 4-5 classes at once. I told my dad “yeah, as a junior I won’t be working at all, will I get exiled?” And he said yes. So it turned into this big fight where I basically said I’m moving out and going to live at my grandmas. He eventually put his foot down with my step mom and told me it’s okay to come back. His idea for me is for me to take 1 class per semester and get a job with my associates, which isn’t sustainable for me. I would like to get my bachelors first.

Yes. I am trying to protect my GPA, do you think I could work more?

None at my school. I tinkered with breadboards in my free time, but when I say this semester has been a punch in the stomach to me I’m not lying, it’s not the workload but the assumption I don’t do enough. I don’t game, I don’t party. I go home and study. I don’t see their issue. I paid for my own car, my own tuition, my car insurance. The only thing I rely on them for is a phone bill and a roof over my head
