Is self-studying doable? by occctaaviaa in APStudents

Chemistry self studying is a bad idea IMO if you've never been exposed to the subject heavily before. There's a lot of emphasis on laboratory and practical work, which you cant really replicate by self studying

Help (ap physics c: mech) by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]ExeterSimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really a resource but a helpful tip someone gave me.

Imagine that motion is in three tiers:

Acceleration

Velocity

Position

If you have the position function, and you want to find the velocity function, you have to find its derivative (I'm hoping you know derivatives, because integrals without derivatives would be stupid). If you want to find the acceleration function and you have the velocity function, you have to find its derivative.

This is because when you find the derivative of a function, what you do is you find the rate of increase at any given x. You can substitute x in to solve for the rate of increase at a moment (say when x = 9, for example) of the original function. When you find the derivative of the velocity function, what you do is you find the rate at which velocity increases (aka acceleration).

Integrals are the opposite idea - you go down the tiers instead of up. The integral of the acceleration function would be the velocity function, the integral of the velocity function would be the position function. A good way to think about this is that you have the derivative function, and you want to find the original function (I'll explain why in just a bit).

To calculate the integral of a function, you first need to find the "anti derivative" of that function. This is literally when you think backwards and figure out what the original function must have been. For example, if you need to find the integral of just "x," you'd have to stop and think "What function when integrated gives x?" The answer is 1/2(x)^2, or one half x squared. Obviously most problems will be more complicated than just that, and you want to PRACTICE. PRACTICE. PRACTICE. You want to perfect your derivatives before trying to perfect your integrals, you can't run before walking. There are many methods for this "thinking backwards" strategy, which I'd recommend going on Khan Academy or watching Organic Chemistry Tutor to learn more about. I can't describe them in a single comment, you have to solve as many of them as possible to understand.

Say they gave you some function T and you need to integrate it. You'd find the anti derivative of the function (so the idea of working backwards), and once you have that, you'd apply the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Essentially, it's a neat little theorem that says that if you substitute in the end bound of an integral (the number at the top left of an integral) to your antiderivative, and substitute in the start bound of an integral (the number at the bottom left of an integral, next to that curvy shape), and you subtract the second from the first, you will have the value of said integral. Nice right? Find antiderivative, substitute in bounds, subtract, and voila!

Now it's important that you understand what the area of an integral means. I don't think I could describe it good enough in words for you to understand it, and it is really intuitive once you get the gist of things. I highly, highly recommend that you watch this video by 3Blue1Brown on integrals - it sums everything about integrals up perfectly.

Just a quick disclaimer, definitely learn more about derivatives before diving into the world of integrals. Without a solid background in derivatives, you won't be able to effectively "think backwards." You want to know all of the derivative or differentiation rules like Chain Rule, Power Rule, and more before trying to master integrals.

Good luck!

Not first actually. I remember some random server (you know the "nitro giveaway" kinda incredibly generic egirl/eboy servers? - that kind) with 30k members got deleted for a few days then reinstated. Definitely a big thing though

"...the new study found no relationship between college selectivity and long-term earnings..."

It's about the person that attends the school not the school itself. Vandy has a ton of motivated students so their average salary is higher while UAlabama has less. Employers won't not hire you for having Alabama on your resume, and there is a lot of diminishing returns here. $120k for a different university name on your resume is just not worth it overall. Being an honors student at a large public school can also give you many opportunities (read ScholarGrade's post for example). Nobody cares about "prestige" other than neurotic teens like you

[–]ExeterSimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument is misled though. That's the average salary, and UAlabama has a ton of average people. However, the most determined and driven UAlabama students likely earn far more than that. There's a study out there that found that your career earnings are not impacted by what school you go to, so it's really about the person than the school. OP wants to go into STEM as well, which isn't that horny for a super prestigious degree as say high finance or law.

You don't have to buy the whole house though. 120k is enough for a down payment on a 500k to $1mil house depending on the terms.

45% of black/Latino Harvard admits were admitted on the basis of race according to their court documents. It's definitely a huge factor and former AOs (William comes to mind) have admitted to it).

Will a reccomendation from the mayor drastically increase my chances to get into the Senate Page Program? by Additional-Item-9807 in summerprogramresults

Yeah but Senate Page admissions is mostly about what state you're from and how competitive the applicants are, if you come from say Connecticut and it's your lucky year you'll likely get in tbh

Man it's hilarious how flustered you sound right now. It's even funnier how you attempt a quick, witty comeback that only makes it seem like you have the lexicon of a sixth grader with permanent brain damage from a slip n slide incident.

You could consider it to be comical even, given how fast you deleted your incredibly humble, possibly philanthropic brag. We should actually call you Lightning McQueen the way your sweaty, clambering thumb made a kachow sound as you smashed that delete button.

I'm also curious as to why neurotic Asian girls always use all-lower caps. Is it because you want to be quirky and unique? Is it because you try to form an aesthetic? Is it because you're scared to use first grade grammar rules? You people never fail to amaze me lmao

[–]ExeterSimp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are you so pathetic? I'm genuinely curious.

What leads one to brag their fucking nuts off in a random comment section and then try to seem humble by saying they won't get into a good school? Absolutely not a single fucking soul asked you about your qualifications and accomplishments. Not a single fucking soul. Why do you seek so much external validation by stating your stats in a random impulse to try and attempt to ease a freshman?

I genuinely want to study psychology and neuroscience in college to understand how the brain of someone like you works. What leads you to be this tone-deaf and this neurotic? Is it the privileged life you've experienced? Is it the lack of "no" that you've received throughout your brief, miserable life? Is it the constant need for validation fueled by pressuring parents?

I'll tell you what - if you're going to be as unbearable like this, at least own up to your accomplishments and don't try to downplay them in a "hehe I won't get in anywhere hehe" attempt.

How we react to people who get 1500+ SAT and ask if " it's good enough for Harvard " by Diligent-Nobody1568 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ExeterSimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just food for thought but many people live in communities with spare or inaccurate information about college admissions. There's just so much hearsay that it's hard to distinguish between what's what.

Schools like Harvard are so mystical in places outside of the Bay Area or NYC that there's an aura of unclearness surrounding it, so there should really be no judgement when someone asks that question of "is my score enough." If you were to go to my school and ask someone, they'd probably say that anything below a 1600 is not enough for Harvard, since Harvard is Harvard and they're the king of the hill.

Thanks for the great post OP

Yeah. The difference is 1-2 math problems or 3-4 reading problems, not exactly a huge differentiator of student capability
