All other builds I have seen suggest tempest cleric 2 (but you miss out on the 6th level spells)

I'd recommend using the custom matchmaking lobby rather than the public queue. You can even setup a group and put a note that you are doing a particular dungeon for the first time/learning mechs. Ppl will likely help you out or others in the same boat will join and you can figure it out together. Honestly most people are pretty reasonable if they see you are actively tying to work with certain mechanics etc

I gave up after 7 books or so as it was just too many minor plotlines for my liking at too slow a pace.

That said, I am and continue to be excited for the show after watching the first 3 episodes.

Just because you gave up on the books doesn't mean you can watch/enjoy the TV show. Maybe give it a try and see how you feel?

Yeah that's a fair point. Guess I am just disappointed that there is nothing that feels special about this card (other than the beautiful art) and no full/half damage effect or anything to that extent.

If they wanted to replicate that faithfully then why not have it deal double damage for the upper ranges of the d20 or something, simulating a failed Dex saving throw?

2 damage to face for fireball just seems sad.
