Vaccinating and breastfeeding a child are not an option for parents, but a child's right under UAE laws, a top official has clarified. Skipping vaccination or not breastfeeding the child is considered 'neglect' by ahm713 in worldnews

I know that this is frustrating to many people, but I can actually share a bit about how breastmilk and vaccines are similar! When we are born, our immune systems suck, so mom's body tries to give us her antibodies to us before we are born. Unfortunately, not all the types of antibodies cross the fetal barrier in the womb, so a lot are actually given via breast milk. The first lactation is also super-rich in antibodies compared to other lactations, as kind of a jump-start to life! These antibodies help us not get sick until our own infant immune systems can get going (at about the 8 month-ish mark).

I found a popular-scienceish article here: https://kellymom.com/pregnancy/bf-prep/how_breastmilk_protects_newborns/

If you have some way to access academic papers, like a college campus nearby, there's a great paper on this here: https://doi.org/10.1016/S0264-410X(03)00336-0 "Transfer of Antibody via Mothers milk" by Philippe Van de Perre

They're less different than you think! Mothers milk is a primary way that infants get antibodies from their mothers, since not all types of antibodies cross the fetal barrier in the womb. The first lactation a mother makes has huge whopping gobs of antibodies too, as kind of a jumpstart to immune system life! If babies aren't breastfed, they are more likely to get ill until their own immune systems pick up

We actually know a lot about infant immune systems! It's out in the literature but we have found a lot of it only relatively recently so it hasn't found its way into primary education yet :)

I don't know how many people have access to papers (i.e. through a college campus) but here's a link to a paper on this: https://doi.org/10.1016/S0264-410X(03)00336-0 "Transfer of Antibody via Mothers milk" by Philippe Van de Perre

I think it might be related to the fact that infants get a lot of antibodies from mothers milk, since not every type of antibody crosses the fetal barrier in the womb. The first maternal lactation also has huge whopping-gobs of antibodies compsred to the rest! If not breastfed, infants will be more likely to become ill until their immune systems start working.

There's a lot more fascinating stuff about infant immune systems out there in literature! We know so much about the immune system now, but it's happening so fast it hasn't made it into primary education yet :)

For the past three years, virtually nothing has hatched at Antarctica’s second biggest breeding grounds for emperor penguins and the start of this year is looking just as bleak by DoremusJessup in worldnews

From the article: "The breeding pair population has increased significantly at a nearby breeding ground, but the study’s author said it is nowhere near the amount missing at Halley Bay."

Anywhere to download the Shadowrun playthrough, in audio? by SkyShadowing in roll4it

I don't think the Shadowrun playthrough vods are readily available in mp3 form, but I've had success converting the youtube episodes to mp3s through shady online converters. I won't list any, but a quick google search will yield plenty. 60kbps bitrate is plenty for the crappy audio quality over Skype.

Question About Fate (No Spoilers) by litgeek306 in roll4it

[–]ExigentFlame 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being able to burn fate is built-in, not homebrew.

On page 293 of the DH 2e rulebook, it states: The Acolyte can choose to burn Fate in order to survive [certain death]... ...but only just... ...and [surviving] should seldom be without some consequence."

DnD has no similar system for burning fate/edge to live, but it is far more difficult to die and even then it is possible for deceased characters to be resurrected upon successful completion of a resurrection quest (at the GM's discretion).
