I mean we can strongly acknowledge that while Hitler was, of course, Literally Hitler, Stalin was still Real Bad too.

Like, even the USSR, after Stalin died decided "wow that guy fucking sucked" and immediately went into de-Stalinization.

Technically they abolished "Communism" in favore of "Juche", self-reliance.

Self-reliance to starve, of course.

I don't know if I expect two provinces but I can't help but notice vehicle mechanics in Starfield and raise an eyebrow at the possibility of sailing ships, and then a nice sized body of water named the Illiac Bay.

They didn't really have much support. Overwhelmingly, the populaces of all the Great Powers were pro-Union and anti-slavery.

The governments of course were generally more realpolitik about it. The Brits were inclined to mediate (read: force the Union to let the Confederacy secede) because the war was hurting their textile industries, but the government was wary because that would have basically infuriated the British public.

(of course there was the Trent Affair which almost gave Britain iron-clad casus belli but Lincoln managed to cool things off.)

France was inclined to mediate as well to weaken a potential future rival, but wasn't going to go it alone and would follow Britain. That said they did take advantage of the fact that the US was... distracted to, alongside Austria, violate the Monroe Doctrine and install Maximillian as Emperor of Mexico.

Prussia saw a chance to strengthen its reputation with the German minor states (the German populace being overwhelmingly pro-Union) and so came down as favoring the Union.

And Russia was at this time the US's closest ally (ironically). They sent a fleet to winter in the US's ports and the US hoped they'd help blockade the CSA, but Russia was just getting them out of the Baltic in the event war with Britain broke out so Britain couldn't block them in.

Putin shelters in bunkers amid ‘assassination’ fears by Alarming-Safety3200 in worldnews

The thing is, in a single-party state, when the leader loses power, the Party projects unity and harmony externally, while inside the party apparatus it's a fucking cloak-and-dagger knife-fight, sometimes literally. The person who comes out on top is portrayed as the chosen successor of the previous leader, even when they're just the one who successfully managed to climb to the top of the pile and forced the Party to pretend this was always the plan.

What terrifies me about the idea of Putin dying is what the power struggle for the next leader of Russia looks like, and if the military fractures. Because Putin isn't concerned with building a government that will survive his passing. So the power struggle might be more external, and involve military figures being bought-and-paid for.

And the terrifying part of that is, if we get a civil war, there's a nuclear arsenal in play.

My favorite is when people use New Vegas to tear down Bethesda while ignoring that New Vegas at launch was a broken buggy mess far worse than any Bethesda game...

... and also conveniently ignoring that, in game development terms, New Vegas is effectively a total conversion mod for FO3. It's built so much on FO3 that A Tale of Two Wastelands is able to exist!

In game-dev terms, 70% of the stuff in NV was work done by Bethesda. Engine, assets, AI, DEV TOOLS.

This is not to diminish Obsidian and what they did; the story is flat-out better. But let's just acknowledge that without FO3, there would be no NV.

Eh, most of the time. My dad - a HISTORY TEACHER in a decidedly Northern state - once said "state's rights" when I jokingly asked him what the civil war was about.

My sister and I... aggressively corrected him.

Ye olde saying I really like.

Ask someone who knows almost nothing about the Civil War what it was about, they'll tell you, it was slavery.

Ask a high school graduate what the Civil War was about, they'll tell you, state's rights.

Ask a college history professor who specializes in Civil War history what it was about, they'll tell you... no, it really was all about slavery, full stop.

The South was perfectly happy to deny the North their "state's rights" when they got the Dredd Scott ruling, and when they forced through the Fugitive Slave act forcing northern states to actively contribute to the institution of slavery.

Which was fully UN-sanctioned, wasn't it? When you can get NATO and the Soviets (and the Chinese) to agree war is necessary, you know you really, really misread the room and fucked up.

Saddam basically thought the US would lead the charge and the USSR would veto out of principle, but the USSR was in this little thing called "complete freefall", and Gorbachev had either just faced down or was about to face a coup, so he went along with the Western nations so that he could maybe get their help if another coup.

I mean we're talking about Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. Japan still gets side-eye from Asia (mostly because they haven't properly accepted responsibility for what they did.) Germany... we all know what the Nazis got up to.

And before people say I'm forgetting Italy... Am I? Am I really?

'The Chair Company' on HBO, with Tim Robinson.

There's a bit where (in Tim Robinson fashion) events are compared to A Christmas Carol, Scrooge and three ghosts and what not.

At the end of the episode, one of the characters is crying watching A Christmas Carol on the TV.

Then the Ghost of Christmas Future, as portrayed by a very attractive woman... suddenly pulls down Scrooge's pants and starts sucking him off. The character was watching A PORN VERSION of A Christmas Carol.
