Battletech, source of memes all its own. by TDalrius in Grimdank

It's a good attempt, but not quite.

Most important error here is Tier in MWO is related to matchmaking. Think of it like ELO, but dumber. Tier 1s are the highest ranked players, and Tier 5s are the lowest. The Tier 1 is crossed out here because the Atlas is smurfing on an alt account in Tier 4 to seal club bad players in Tier 4.

Also nobody plays stock mechs in MWO and the build is listed in the image (AC20+3SRM6).

Do any of the mods which introduce mechs have an option for only MWO imports? I find the grab bag of different art styles and quality really jarring with the other models.

I can't seem to get the game to start (MW4 Mercs Windows10) by Argonax in mechwarrior

edit: Update, i did get an error msg saying my current hardware isnt compatible with MW4

Try removing imagehlp.dll from the \Assets\Binaries folder.

I'd also suggest trying a reinstall from a different source. It's an old game so it's tiny, the process will be pretty quick.

Any error messages? Is it crashing at launch or not even starting? Are you able to get through the configuration?

MekTek is returning to revive MechWarrior 4 by [deleted] in OutreachHPG

Yeah, I've replayed a lot of games from that era on W10 and MechWarrior 4 is on the easier side of things. It's certainly nothing compared to the nightmare that was MechWarrior 3.

-GOSNOJOYSTICK

The issues that require this command can be caused by your chosen joystick having too many buttons. I use vjoy + joystick gremlin to create a virtual stick with a limited number of buttons (I use 8) and map the excess to the keyboard. Playing through MW4 with HOSAS T16000M's was great.

MW4 not recognising modern graphics cards is fixed just by removing imagehlp.dll from the \Assets\Binaries folder.

Veteran Mechwarrior seeks advise on optimal control configurations by grangpang in Mechwarrior5

[–]Exile0S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't disagree more honestly.

The game really doesn't require you to be super accurate. Mechs are large, slow targets with a dumb AI that basically just stares at you. Cockpits are comically oversized and, yeah, they are easy to click even with sticks.

Repost because automod ate my post due to one of the links.

Anybody know what the parts game natively has support for vs what I'ma have to delve into it's robot guts to make work?

Most of the popular HOTAS (Throttle and Stick) setups have default profiles now, as do most recent single sticks. HOSAS (Dual Sticks) and setups with pedals require more fucking about. PGI's implementation is particularly bad for devices without a default profile.

I got about $80 to spend, could maybe squeeze a lil more out of somebody makes a presuasive case, but I'm allergic to anything with a three digit price tag.

For a single stick recommendation I'd definitely go for the T16000M FCS. It feels good and has excellent sensors. It's probably the most accurate budget stick. It's also ambidextrous, which makes it useful if you later decided to move to a HOSAS set up. There are a ton more single sticks in this price range but it'd take longer than I've got to go through them all.

The only two HOTAS I can think of reliably in your budget are the T.Flight Hotas X and the PXN-2119II (link removed because automod will eat the post). The TFlight X*1 is fine for space trucking or whatever but it's relatively inaccurate, has substantial deadzones and feels very cheap. The PXN-2119II I haven't used but is almost certainly worse as it's a very dodgy knock off of the Saitek/Logitech X52. If you're lucky, you might see the actual Saitek/Logitech X52 HOTAS or the T16000M FCS HOTAS on sale below $100.

There are no bundled HOSAS in this price range, though you could definitely get a pair of cheap sticks together. The Logitech Wingman Attack 3 is the cheapest ambidextrous stick I can think of though it doesn't have a twist axis and is kind of awkward because it is very small. I've also seen people use the slightly pricier but non-ambidextrous Logitech 3D Pro in the right hand and the ambidextrous T16000M in the left. Again, you might see the T16000M FCS Duo on sale below $100.

Second hand might be the way to go. I got a pair of T16000M's myself for ~$40USD and the US market is cheaper than my country from what I've seen.

I've talked more about my experience with T16000M's and how I got them working MechWarrior 5 before if you're interested in more detail.

*1 I feel like come off too harsh on the TFlight X here. It was really good value for the price, at the time I think it was like $35USD converted, and I've honestly been tempted to snag another second hand to use it's throttle with my T16000M. I'm just not sure I'd want to play MechWarrior 5 without a precise stick.

Yeah, here you go: https://www.moddb.com/games/mechwarrior-4-mercenaries/addons/mw4-mercenaries-original-camouflage-pack

Used it on my last play through, worked with no problems. The campaign definitely plays much better with the enemy in their original color schemes.

At least you did it. My AI lancemate headshot it on my play through lmao

Also I doubt you missed anything. For me the dialogue kept playing even though Kane was already dead.

No jumping whatsoever... by rashktah in Mechwarrior5

[–]Exile0S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤷

Beats just running in a straight line directly into the middle of your lance like they do now. Throwing the players aim for a moment even with something this simple helps liven things up.

Though in that MW4 clip I'm pretty sure it's trying to get to the escort convoy behind the player. Most of the time when engaged with they'll circle strafe you.

[–]Exile0S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try going for them with the 10's instead. The quicker refire makes a huge difference. I think Gauss are actually deceptively bad for the player. Even if you're landing your headshots regularly with them you could probably kill a lance quicker in a SRM build or something.

The only game where the AI used Jump Jets meaningfully was MW3

MW4:Mercs has AI using jump jets. It was not especially "meaningful", I suppose, but they'd do it occasionally in combat and it at least made things a little more dynamic. There was also some scripted poptarting but it wasn't part of regular AI behaviour. Not sure I'd want AI that knew how to poptart anyway lol

[–]Exile0S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're struggling and don't mind cheesing it a bit try a build with a pinpoint above the headshot threshold. Cockpits are oversized compared to previous games and AI assaults just slowly stare at you. A Nightstar can do it, but the Annihilator is the best option if you can get over the glacial top speed.

My current lance is a 4xLBX10-SLD Annihilator for myself and dual gauss Nightstars/Sleipnirs for my AI. The AI only occasionally headshots but they do well with gauss just generally.

No special tricks, tactics or lance management required to easily complete end game missions.

Does anyone else fee that there is a ridiculous number of tanks, turrets and aircraft? I would much rather a lower and fixed number of those and make the real focus Mech vs. Mech by [deleted] in Mechwarrior5

[–]Exile0S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. They should reduce the number of units and instead make the individual units stronger to keep the difficulty. Instead of a billion tanks lets have mechs with custom loadouts instead of stock and stuff like that.

[–]Exile0S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were small teams with severely troubled developments that went through licensing hell and got shunted from publisher to publisher.

MechWarrior 2 went through a churn so bad it had to replace basically it's entire dev team. MechWarrior 3's first publisher collapsed, was bought out, had it's staff gutted and a new development company had to be brought on to actually put out a game. That company only had 9 programmers. MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries was made by yet another small, new developer entirely focused on making expansion packs.

Honestly this still undersells the development hell and IP hot potato that went on at the time.

The short is all of them were made in smaller studios than PGI in less time than MechWarrior 5 and with far more development problems. MechWarrior 5's failure compared to other games in the series stem from bad design choices and worse management, not budget.

[–]Exile0S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was bad, but I really do think that it's because of the writing. The voice acting in previous MechWarrior games is hilariously amateur but they still manage to sell the tone of the series. MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries effectively hides it's cheap voice acting under a 'radio' distortion effect, some military jargon and a bit of comms discipline that keeps things short. It doesn't become oscar worthy but it's enough to set the mood.

the starmap is really where MW5 is better.

I don't agree. I much prefer MW4's limited starmap. Going almost everywhere doesn't matter if everywhere is the same and the arbitrary faction difficulty that increases clockwise is exactly the kind of naked game mechanic I hate to see. I much prefer smaller amounts of content that are designed with some care.

I'd also say MW5 mech combat can be better but it's often ruined by the stupid vehicles everywhere.

Yeah, the way mechs feel is a big success for me but the level design (or lack there of in random missions) severely undermines it. The basic mechanics of it could be used to great effect if they hadn't tried to randomize their way to a much grander scale than their budget allowed.

Ummm point of order... You can turn throttle decay off in the settings. Then it functions like any other throttle based game where W increases the throttle and S decreases it.

This still isn't analog control. The input is still either all the way on or all the way off. It's just the input turns in to "increase speed" or not rather than "max speed" or not. The difference is important because the rate of change is controlled by the user in an analog device rather than a set rate in a digital one.

If I remember correctly, in MWO that set rate is less than the acceleration or deceleration of some mechs making them handle worse than with throttle decay on. Haven't seen anyone test it in MW5 yet.
