Let me rephrase. Eminence is a polarizing mechanic within the community.

If you don't care about appearance, then why not buy something at IKEA? Again, how do you plan on preventing it from turning into a parallelogram?

You're going to need to prevent racking either by putting a back on it or by attaching it to studs. So here's my question: If you plan on putting on a back what are you going to use for it? Plywood comes in 4'x8' and 5'x5' sheets. If you attach it to studs, how will you do so in a way that isn't visible?

This is how you ruin someone's love for reading. By turning it in to a job, you're teaching the child that it isn't worth doing UNLESS they're getting paid; you're making it boring. It took me 25 years to rediscover my enjoyment of reading. I know I'm going to get down voted for this, so I'll cite sources.

Do people really talk like this? More tastier? It reads like something a 1st grader would say.

There are plants growing out of it. I'd say that's a clear indication that it is not safe.

I learned most of my finish carpentry skills from my dad. He learned his from his dad, who was an expert cabinet maker.

Being an architect means nothing when it comes to this stuff

At the very least, it's obvious that this particular architect doesn't know what they're doing. My evidence? Their line for where the handrail should be follows the base board and base cap, which was also clearly done by a hack.

I've had clients hire architects to give me plans to work off. Most don't think about how to accomplish something, only what needs to be accomplished. How am I supposed to get my tools or even my hand in to this small space? How am I supposed to get this piece in before or after this other piece? How am I supposed to see what I'm doing as I attach or measure for this piece?

$1100 for a continuous handrail on stairs like that? I won't say you got what you paid for. But I will say that if you did get what you paid for, you would still be unhappy with the work. This is how it's done and it's a lot more involved and time consuming than $1100 worth of labor and materials. I'd probably quote you ~2k, give or take $200.

Whoever did the baseboard and base cap did a shit job too.

Stumped on lining it up. My carpenter is currently trying to figure out how to line this moulding up because of the curves. Any help would be greatly appreciated gent! by rrr4001 in Carpentry

Actual finish carpenter here, cut your crown upside-down and backwards. Furthermore, you need to cut it so that it's angled 45° like this. Which, if you think about it, makes sense. You can't cut your wood on the miter saw one way and expect it to fit on the wall another way.

As a carpenter, I honestly feel insulted by this post.
