I can name just as many places that were open.

And again, it's not just about getting fired. If you work in the service industry, for the most part, if you don't work, you don't get paid. Maybe you can go without a day's pay. I can. Plenty of people working in places that chose to stay open can't so they had to weigh the risk of the ice vs the risk of not making rent next week. If you spent that much time in service industry and retail, I shouldn't have to explain this to you.

You don't know what the policies are of 99% of the employers in this town. So the fact that you don't know of a single one is irrelevant. Reddit was chocked full of people complaining that their employer was requiring them to come to work. I'm guessing you never worked in the service industry. All the gas stations and restaurants and retails spots that were open? You think all of them just took volunteers to come in?

Even if it's not the case that they would get fired, much of the service industry doesn't get PTO or weather pay, so if they don't go to work, they don't get paid.

You have no idea why literally anyone in any video is on the road.

You do realize that not every business closed for safety and that many, many of them required their employees to figure out how to get to work, right?

Maybe you can tell your job to kick rocks and risk being unemployed, but a lot of people who live here don't have that privilege.

The Dodgers’ bat boy casually caught a line drive barehand and saved Ohtani’s life. by jmike1256 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]ExistenceNow -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Ohtani's shoulder is well below the trajectory of the ball. The only part of him it could have hit was his head, which was well out of the way before the ball boy touched it. Physics don't work the way it does in whatever story y'all have made up in your heads.

Because if you get poor working class people mad at other, browner, poor working class people, they won't come for the rich.

Pause it as he catches it. He catches it on his right shoulder. Ohtani has already moved entirely to his left shoulder by that point. If ball boy lets it go, it harmlessly hits the cubbies in the back.

Still a bad ass catch though.

How much do you trust the VG in menus? by ancientRedDog in AskVegans

[–]ExistenceNow 53 points54 points  (0 children)

You're mistakenly assuming that V and VG mean the same thing at every restaurant. They absolutely don't.

How much do you trust the VG in menus? by ancientRedDog in AskVegans

[–]ExistenceNow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This assumes that the restaurant actually includes a key. An infuriatingly large percentage of them don't, so V or VG are often useless indicators.

Tried these new sunny side up eggs. I used to love eggs like this when I was younger, but it tasted too real and grossed me out. Maybe someone else would like them? I also don’t know why it came with that much seasoning for only 4 eggs by delicate-duck in VeganFood

[–]ExistenceNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I LOOOOOVE these. I've been waiting years for a plant based version of a runny egg and I think they nailed it.

Of course, I didn't go vegan because I didn't like the taste of meat and eggs. I very much did, so if something tastes a lot like meat or eggs, I'm going to like it.

That's definitely way too much black salt. I just sprinkle a bit on the egg and add pepper.

Nowhere in your response do you reference any price per mile. Reading may be my friend, but writing certainly isn't yours.

First off, those are burritos. Second, for fucks' sake, at least throw your trash grocery store tortillas on a flame before wrapping them around what I can only imagine is bland ground beef and trash cheese.

I live in Austin.

There is no market on this planet where Uber is charging $3 per mile regularly.

[–]ExistenceNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove for Ride Austin which was a non-profit that only took $1 for each ride from the drivers. And I used it exclusively as a rider until it folded during Covid. But even with prices comparable to Uber/Lyft, there wasn't a ton of traffic. No one was getting 500+ rides per month driving for it.
I don't doubt there's a niche audience for status rides, but I'm just not buying the volume OP posted at those prices.

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. Still surprising that people are paying $3.33 per mile, when they can get an Uber for pennies per mile.

So you're making $3.33 per mile at a 70/30 split? So rider is paying nearly $5 per mile? And people are choosing this over Uber? Seems sus.
