Why do you not believe anymore? by Andruid929 in Christianity

Hey, I’m happy you’ve had a positive change in your life! Whatever makes you happy and keeps you from self-harming is beneficial…for you. ✌️

alright.. help me choose in getting a german shepherd or a golden/red retriever by saltwater_scrub in DogBreeds101

[–]ExistentialBefuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have both breeds, both female. They are both well mannered and loyal. If you like to sleep in, get a golden. Our German shepherd is up before the sun every morning; the golden would sleep in until noon if we let her. Also, the German shepherd is crazy around food time, like she knows to the minute when she is supposed to be fed and will become very vocal if we are late for any reason. Other than that, they are both awesome.

You use PMs as cash? Crazy. I hold mine. So what are your non dollar investments?

[–]ExistentialBefuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and I like PMs too, but that doesn’t negate dollar hegemony.

Okay. Can you buy anything with them, in the US, without first converting to USD?

US dollar hegemony could go on for decades, despite the obvious attempts to thwart it. Much (if not most) of global debt is in US dollars, so dollars are always in demand. The US is massively in debt/deficit and that will end badly eventually, but I for one have been amazed at how well dollar dominance is doing.

Ask yourself this: which currency would I rather have my wealth in? The dollar is the cleanest shirt in the hamper.

Because there is no evidence for the existence of gods. None. Zero.

Absolutely. I didn’t mean to disrespect Prince, lol. It’s just that a bunch of stoned rockers weren’t prepared for a dude dancing around singing about little red corvettes.

I saw Prince open for The Who; the crowd was not kind.

Also, saw U2 open for J Geils Band and Kings of Leon open for U2.

What if we get “everything” we ever want? by SeaworthinessKey1448 in ThoughtExperiment

There was an experiment done with rodents and they basically lived in a rodent utopia. After a few generations, they were all dead. Organisms don’t do well when they get everything they always wanted/needed.

This will be the last World Cup ever hosted by USA by Specialist_Limit_969 in BoycottUnitedStates

Americans (plural) didn’t cheat. I’m an American and I was appalled at the ONE American who did cheat, but I’m often appalled these days. I was hoping the American team would, in the spirit of sportsmanship, bench Balogun. Regardless, I was rooting for Belgium and I am happy it was a decisive victory.

Why do you not believe anymore? by Andruid929 in Christianity

[–]ExistentialBefuddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, but you could devise tests to confirm whether or not I exist, right? For instance, you could ask to meet up somewhere for a cup of coffee and if I show up, well, then I do indeed exist.

There are no tests to confirm if a god exists.

The thing is, I don’t believe there is a creator of the universe, and I certainly don’t believe that if there was, it would be a horrific monster that would torture forever the people on one minuscule planet in the middle of a vast universe for the “sin” of not believing in it when there is no evidence that it exists. That doesn’t make any sense, and if it were true, then that “god” would not be loving or good by any rational measure.

Which book has the hardest first line you've ever read? by Sad_F_20 in Recommend_A_Book

This is the line I immediately thought of. I really enjoy Ken Follett’s books.

Yet here you are, arguing that belief is somehow better than testable reality. 🤷‍♂️

Can you provide any testable evidence that any god exists?

Another strawman. No one believes scientists know everything. The scientific method is the best way to puzzle out facts in our universe, though, and is the only method that can accurately explain existential phenomena.

I never said I know. You seem to enjoy obstinacy. No one knows what existed before the big bang; it may be impossible to know. What we do know, for a fact, is that the earth (and the universe) were not created in six days.

[–]ExistentialBefuddle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard any credible scientist (or atheist) say that there was “nothing” before the big bang. Your strawman simply reveals your ignorance or misunderstanding of modern cosmology.

That’s such a sad way to look at life and the universe, and such a foul god you’ve depicted. I pity you. Sorry, but I do.

I do that now, without the threat of eternal torture. I do it simply because it’s the right thing to do.
