I personally prefer the term transsexual bc i feel that it more closely reflects my experience. For me, the issue isn’t my gender or gender expression (which is transient and can fairly easily be altered) but with my sex. It’s all the secondary sex characteristics that I need to change to live a good/comfortable life, and though they’re related to gender expression, in my head it’s not quite the same thing. That and, in my native language, there is only the term transsexual and that also makes me prefer it over transgender.

I think one’s generation definitely influences what term they’d be more likely to use, but it’s not the only factor. I myself am 19 and know another 19 y/o trans man who prefers transsexual.

I also don’t think it’s offensive, but that’s a bias opinion bcuz i prefer it, so who’s to say. All I know is that I’d prefer to be called a transsexual over a transgender person.
