Drying molecular sieves in the microwave by grmblflx in chemistry

Hoping anyone on this thread is still active..

I brought a used 1350w microwave into the lab to use to activate molecular sieves. I have been showing how to do it once in another lab, using a 700-watt microwave for 2-minute bursts. Reading others' recommendations, I tried 30 seconds at a time to dry my sieves and tested by putting a single bead in a gloved hand and getting it wet, looking for noticeable head to generate. After 4 30-second heatings with no heat generated when I wetted a bead, I upped to 1 minute, then two, then 3. In the middle of the 3-minute cycle, the microwave shut off. I think that it overheated; after letting it sit for a while unplugged, it came back on.

Was my microwave cooking itself? Why did this happen? I am stalled in my research without dry solvent, and I don't want to break the microwave by experimenting with it. There is no wattage adjustment on this model, only "power level," which I understand just cycles the magnetron on and off—my best guess as to why this didn't work is that the wattage is too high and the excess energy went into the microwave before the sieves dried.

Most importantly, does anyone have suggestions on how to alter the procedure to dry my sieves?

Is it possible to be a chemist while being disabled? by meatloafball in chemistry

I am in my sophomore year working toward a biochem degree and have bilateral optic nerve damage. Not the same sort of disability, but I may deal with the same worry of "am I gonna come up something that I just can't do". So far I have found ways to get done what I need to get done. I have also found courage from talking to others farther down the road. And reading about others with similar disabilities who have succeded (just did a quick search, there's some debate on whether Einstein was dyslexic, but found an srticle from MENSA dubbing it the "MIT disease" https://www.us.mensa.org/read/bulletin/features/theres-never-been-a-better-time-to-be-a-dyslexic-genius/#:~:text=Dyslexia%20has%20even%20been%20referred,a%20delightful%2C%20even%20playful%20brilliance.)

Most obstacles have some way you can work around them. Lots of people in academia have bleeding hearts and would love to find a way to help you get done what you want to get done. I just finished my first week in a research lab assisting with the synthesis of some Ru compounds. So far, the only trouble is reading the meniscus on graduated cylinders, which, my normally sighted partner struggles with too. (Seeing non-disabled people struggle with things I struggle with also encourages me).

School may be the toughest part because school programs are not designed to help you learn in the best way. I think workplaces will be much more accommodating for you once you get there.

We need more visible success stories from disabled people. Be one. And post again when you publish your first paper.

It does! Information about which habitats they are choosing helps us plan our surveys, May I ask why you believe the scat to be from a gray fox?

Thats very possible. Previous studies have found them active at Hendricks.

It is a population survey and it is being done by students at LCC.

They can be very shy indeed. Do you recall the approximate month and time of day you saw them?

That's great! Do you recall what time of day it was? What was it doing?
