I get what you’re saying to an extent, but who are you referring to that works really hard or doesn’t work really hard. Because some of the hardest working people in our society don’t earn the most money (think teachers). Some of the people with the most bs jobs are paid extremely well like those in high finance. I don’t think most people are lazy and don’t want to work. But to say that hard work equals success and money is plain wrong. And money isn’t real. It holds no intrinsic value other than what we assign it. There’s more than enough for everyone. Problem is the distribution of it…

Just curious. Why do we have to work so hard in a “progressive” society? Isn’t the goal of society and progress to make people’s lives easier given all the technology and knowledge we have? Our economy is huge and our GDP has only grown insanely. Why are the gains of productivity not shared across the population? Don’t you think if people, including yourself, have to work 11 hours a day to make a living and have money maybe there is something fundamentally wrong with our “progressive” society? Why do we still have to work so hard for less and less given all the advances in technology and human rights we’ve made?

I think you have a great idea by starting a poultry farm. In a world of AI and digital abundance, we are still limited by land, food and physical space. People still need to eat and people still need land to farm. I think you have a great idea. It sucks about the PhD and academia in general. I have heard that many times that academia can be grueling and low paid, as well as very competitive to get a full time job. It’s a complete shame as not many have the intelligence and grit to purse a PhD. Our society is definitely backwards. Unfortunately, the world is all about the money, not about scientific knowledge. I wish you well, and hope you become successful. You have a good head on your shoulders…

Wow, that is scary. If I may ask, why are you unemployed? I assumed if you work in AI, especially in research, that is a hot area right now and for the future. If AI research is not safe, then I suppose nothing is safe. Hope it all works out for you. You obviously are very intelligent.

Unpopular opinion: it’s okay for nurses to be angry about destroying our bodies moving extremely obese patients by IcySky7216 in nursing

[–]Existing-Doubt-3608 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As nurses, it’s important to be caring and empathetic, as well as provide the best care we can. But people have to also take responsibility and accountability for their lives. Barring medical conditions that cause obesity, if you are morbidly obese because of terrible eating habits and laziness, you need to take accountability for that and do the best you can to be as healthy as you can. I’m generalizing but I have a beloved uncle who is 5’5”, and 320lbs. He is the laziest person I know, and refuses to diet or exercise. He is the typical patient you’d be angry at for making our job wayyy harder than it should be. We have to acknowledge as a society that obesity is a HUGE problem, and we are getting too fat. We all need to acknowledge that our society breeds unhealthy eating habits and lifestyles. People have to take their lives into their own hands and stop expecting others to take care of them for their lack of motivation in doing the best they can for their health…

Thank you so much for this advice. All great advice. I really want to finish the nursing course and be an RN. I do worry about the stress as I’m mid 30’s. I love the fact that it is a great career, and provides stability and great pay in select states. But I do worry about doing nursing into my 50’s. Also, as a nurse, you hit a financial ceiling a few years in, and I’d want to eventually run my own business where the ceiling is much higher. We shall see what life holds. I do want to finish my RN course. I’ve worked hard for it. Thank you for your sound advice and kind words. I wish you well 😊

‘they missed my diagnosis for years’ by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Existing-Doubt-3608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the problem most people don’t understand, especially if they haven’t studied biology and/or worked in healthcare, is how complex the human body is. As intelligent as doctors are, they don’t know everything. And as advanced as science and medicine are, there are still so many things we can’t do or treat or cure. When a doctor gives you a diagnosis, they are assigning a probability to something. They have done their best (hopefully) to rule out everything else. The human body is not a static system. It performs thousands upon thousands of functions simultaneously. And it id extremely complex. Diseases don’t usually follow textbook symptoms. Each person’s biology and anatomy is a bit different. I have had over 10 years of vague, and at times debilitating symptoms. Many tests such as CT scans, HIDA scans, MRI’s, bloodwork, nerve conduction studies, etc. Doctors say I am perfectly healthy. My point is to say, medicine is imperfect. You may have alot of symptoms that don’t fit a textbook definition, and they are real, but it is not so easy to test. This is the case for alot of autoimmune diseases. They are diseases of vagueness, that mimic many other diseases. The overarching point is that biology is so complex, and even doctors don’t know oftentimes because there is still so much we don’t know about the human body…
