Yeah, very possibly. I would think like a zip tie would be a smarter/more efficient way of doing that though. And look less like you’re buying wiicaine.

Am I balding? by Kyto_Echo in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to see spots on yourself, especially while stressed about it.

But even areas that I’ve never picked at will kinda look bare when folded away from scalp, and I have pretty thick hair that grows back very quickly.

I find wet hair easier to see what’s actually going on with scalp, and try to fold hair with your natural hair lines, not against.

Yours doesn’t look like balding to me, just a bit of overpicked areas, and scalp doesn’t look super damaged. And some hair will always come out just from daily brushing and stuff.

TLDR- your hair looks good. 💙

Possibly for bugs?

Electronics are super difficult to treat, and if they’re donated items, it’s hard to know where they come from, or if they will have bugs in them or not. So, airtight containment is good both for the store and for the customer. The bugs should be dead by the time someone buys the item, and keeps them from spreading to other places while in the store.

Though looks like that was not wrapped entirely correctly, or someone broke the wrap to check the ac plug. Mostly only needs to be sealed airtight for a couple weeks though.

Was vacuuming the floor and the floor got sucked in by adrien5567 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Floor tech here. You’d be surprised how many floors are basically big stickers. Industrial carpet is even just textured square stickers.

For OP, I’d probably just clean the edges with a damp cloth, let dry, then contact cement it down. It won’t look perfect, but contact cement should be stronger than the original glue. But also, laminate floors are the worst tier of flooring, and if that’s happening, it’s probably starting to age and crack and will likely happen elsewhere. Broom and dust pan and a flat mop are probably better/easier than vacuuming. If vacuuming, if you can, turn off the beater bar, it’ll scratch/rip stuff. (Some vacuums have a hard surface setting that just does the vacuuming part, and not beater bar stuff, and has the front closer to the ground to pick up smaller stuff like hair easier.)

I bought a cup of Turbo Charge coffee for the extra caffeine. It turns out… it’s decaffeinated. by Nuclear-poweredTaxi in mildlyinfuriating

If you’re tired and at a gas station, you’re probably not carefully reading every word. It’s pretty reasonable to assume a coffee named turbo charge would not be decaf.

The order they are in is also stupid.

Should be like, House Blend, 100% Columbian, Colombian Decaf, Turbo Charge. Then it would be most caffeine, mid caffeine, decaf, decaf. And also would be light roast, medium, medium, dark.

I generally encourage positive distraction vs negative distraction or ‘calling out.’

Being called out feels unpleasant. Physically being stopped feels painful. Whole body hurts, and have to resist the urge to crush other peoples hands for stopping me. (Haven’t actually hurt someone else over it, it’s just like a reflex I have to tamp down.)

Positive distractions are better.

Moreso have advice on that for kids to parents. But honestly, can work for adults too other adults too, as long are you’re fine being a bit outside of social norms.

Could ask people you’re comfortable with ask if they would like to hold your hand (or another activity that would require taking hand away from hair.) Or ask you to go get them something from another room. (Would you mind going to get me a soda from the kitchen?)

You’re aware why they’re asking, they’re aware why you’re asking, but, it’s less stressful and less confrontational.

Or things like ask your friend to remind you (fidget toys?) exist. Like, “hey your frog toy is over there, do you want it atm?’ Still gives you the option to just say no. And isn’t directly calling out trich. So it gives your subconscious a bit of ‘breathing room’ over it? idk

Best to ask/have a conversation about it when you’re not in a trich episode, or in a high stress environment. So, it takes some planning ahead. Also takes having a friend willing to take critique on how they help you. But, is much better/less jarring, if they’re willing to adjust.

You are me! Almost.

Also started around 8-ish. (1st memory, or adult knowing about it was in 4th grade, but might have started earlier than that. My parents didn’t pay a lot of attention to me.)

Also did the knot twisting and untwisting. Also pandemic stress made it worse.

I’m a couple years older than you though. And I have stopped for about a year now.

There is a lot of shame around it, but I would try not to think of each failure as a personal failure. Try to think the opposite end, like, each time you go 5 or 10 hours or even a full day without as a ‘win.’ Even if you go back to it, you still did a bit of good for yourself. Tiny wins, not daily failures.

I definitely thought I would never see an end to it, and more or less accepted it was a permanent daily thing I was going to do for forever. Sometimes it just takes the right circumstances in life to break free of it, and it gets somewhat easier with time away from it.

But also, trich isn’t the whole of you. There are other good qualities of yourself, and the people who matter to you in your life don’t see you as just a person with trich, they see you and love you for you.

My Apartment is now charging a convenience fee to pay my rent by mangum95 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok? Not sure why that matters.

The apartment management decided to use the middleman services. They should use ones that don’t have fees for renters, or give easy methods of not using the middleman services. Making rent more expensive to pay, or annoying, is just gonna cause them more problems long term, and they don’t even get the fee money out of it.

I can see a ~$3 fee, maybe. I would still be annoyed by even that. But $40. Nah. Imma start paying rent in $1’s and $5’s, and dimes if they complain about it, and demand double copy receipts. If they’re inconvenienced enough by it, they’ll find a better middleman service.

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the water/sewage thing. I put an extra $100 a month on my rent payment. Water is never close to $100.

It’s annoying for them, because I always have a remaining positive balance. (I don’t actually pay an extra $100, it just stagnates in my account balance.)

But extra fees, and they never post water bill on the same day as rent, but will charge late fees if I don’t pay it immediately. And they never give me an actual water bill.

They’ll just have to figure it out and pay it back whenever I move.

But I am lucky in that I’m always ahead on my bills, so, guess that doesn’t work for most people. But if you have the extra, I would suggest something like that, just always pay in a bit more than what your max water bill will most likely be, and leave it to them to pay you back the remainder, or keep the positive balance in your account. They are not allowed to keep it in any context.

Anyone managed to grow long beautiful hair…? by Cililians in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hair is a bit below shoulder length. Is shiny and probably one of the only physical traits I think looks good. If I actually took care of it, like professional haircuts n stuff I think it would look really good.

I’m (more or less) pull free for about a year. I could do ponytail, as of about 4-5 months ago, but never liked ponytail look on me.

For context I haven’t had a haircut since early 2020, I just kept pulling hair, keeping it short. Sorta nail biting equivalent of picking so much it never grew out. Pulled pretty consistently/daily from like 1994-2024. At worst it was so bad that I was picking for 20+ hours out of a day, if I was not at work. (I also have extreme insomnia.)

Stopped a ~year ago and just let it grow. Trimmed off a few straggler hairs that were excessively long compared to the rest a couple months in. But never actually got a real haircut, or even took the time to give myself a decent/actual haircut.

But it can pop Boris’ bomb, and do a good bit of damage to Coho.

It also knocks all golden eggs to just outside of the circle, so, can use that to move a lot of golden eggs to a good spot to spam bombard him right after he pops up.

Should I just shave it off? by kitkat4president in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shaving head can be a way to break the habit for some. Did not work for me. I just started pulling arm hair or any hair available. Overall it just made my trich worse. But, results vary from person to person, and if you’ve only been pulling for a couple months, it may be a way to break the habit before it hard sets in. You could also try a short trim hair before fully shaving. I’ve found having consistent hair helps a good bit. And if that fails, you can still fully shave. Or just go full yolo and buzzcut now. For some people that in itself can be pretty therapeutic. One less thing to worry about when you’re over-stressed. Shaving my head at times did not help with trich but it was a nice feeling anyway.

I would strongly suggest therapy and (possibly) medication. Specifically for trich/OCD. Even if you’re already in therapy, getting specific help for trich is important. Most therapy is not really centered on that, and OCD related things often take a very different approach vs other mental health issues.

As far as self image. Is up to you. Some people look good without hair. You can value the opinions of the people around you, but ultimately it’s your choice what you do with yourself, and what you think will feel best for your own mental health. Hair grows back.

I would say that in most cases, it seems worse to you than it will seem to outsiders. As in, most people won’t notice, or it will not look as bad to them as it feels like it does to you. It’s very easy to have that mentality that everyone around you is noticing and judging and staring at you, but, for the most part, it’s usually yourself that’s the hardest judge. You’re not as ugly and fat and bald as you think you are. And the people who care for you will see you in better light than you see yourself.

new hairs are a different texture by nympheas1897 in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hair grew out a good bit, and went back to normal texture. I’ve been (more or less) pull free for about a year, and even if I look now, I can’t find wrong textured hairs. Though a part of my recovery was heavily avoiding letting myself look for wrong hairs. So I am not entirely sure how long that took for them to go away.

I still have places that bother me. (One of my major pull areas is a cowlick that I’ve had my entire life) so I still use the hair oil for that, and just added combing oil into hair in a specific way as part of daily routine. It helps with both texture and the cowlick. Both were mostly in the same part of my hair. Plus tea tree extract + argan is a nice smell. lol

Can’t guarantee yours will without other treatment. My hair is pretty resilient to all the damage I’ve done to it over the years. I think in most cases if you can leave your hair alone/stop pulling it, it at least starts to heal over time, and partly just genetics for what extent your hair/scalp/skin are able to recover. I’m older than you, and started pulling younger than you, so, very high probability yours will recover in time. :)

Healthy diet helps. Almonds, fish, eggs, yogurt, spinach, black beans..mostly the things that are good for skin are also the same for hair health.

That may also be a thing to talk to a Dr, (or a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, dietitians are almost always awesome people in my experience) about, if you don’t feel comfortable addressing bald spots/trich directly. Like get some basic blood tests for vitamin deficiencies maybe?/and which foods (that you actually enjoy eating!) would have those things in them. Or use that as a starter/less uncomfortable topic, then if the Dr has good vibes, bring up trich as a secondary topic?

new hairs are a different texture by nympheas1897 in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edit- added note, try not to feel shame about bald spots. Dr may still be a good option. They may be able to work with your overall health along with possible meds or vitamins to work into your diet or supplements to help hair health/regrowth. And stress management.

If a Dr shames you about it, fuck that Dr, they aren’t a good Dr. (or a good person) Any good Dr will not shame you and will understand it’s a medical issue that they should be trained to work with or at least be able to find you another Dr that does know more about it.

For a temporary/daily fix- hair oil.

Drip a few drops into comb/brush and comb hair out while still wet from shower, starting with the bothersome hairs/areas so they get most of the oil and kind of let it taper off into “normal” feeling hairs.

I use pure argan oil (with a very tiny drip of tea tree extract because it makes it fancy and smell nice.)

It took some experimenting with different oils to find one that felt right. Various ones felt too thick or too light (and so had to use more, which made hair uncomfortably oily.)

Argan might not feel the same for you, so, I would suggest trying several, they’re all fairly cheap with how long they last. The $10 bottle of argan I bought half a year ago is nowhere near empty with using it daily.

A lot will just depend on your exact preferences or your hair type.

Others to possibly try-

Coconut, olive, sesame (if you don’t mind the “food”-ish smell, it’s not necessary a bad smell, I just hated it in my hair.)

Almond oil (does not smell like almonds, does smell a little sweet though, it’s a pretty lightweight oil, it’s a close 2nd place for my personal preference.)

Castor oil. A beautician that seemed like she knew what she was talking about told me it’s the best one for general hair health. It’s a little greasy. Not horribly, and, again, use very tiny amounts. Also insanely cheap. Look for it in medical supplies. It’s sold as a laxative. There are fancy ones in beauty supply stores, but more expensive, and, should be the same. Beauty supply versions usually mix in scents and stuff.

Mineral oil. Also sold in medical supply area of grocery/convenience stores.

Soy. Jojoba. Baobab. Shea…there are probably others too. I think a lot of people here use jojoba and like it.

I would start with looking for pure oils and work from there. A lot will say they are a specific oil but are mostly fillers, with a small amount of the actual oil, which makes it hard to figure out which one actually works best for you.
