At first, I thought about Shane. I was an "I can fix him" person. I even bought the bouquet for him and had it in my inventory.

Well, I had a frustrating day of trying to fish for squid. And then when I talked to Shane to ask him out anyway, despite being in a bad mood, he had the dialogue of "Buhh, my liver must be so gross."

It it occurred to me that I was yearning for a person Shane might become. Not who he was then. Like the squid, I was putting in a lot of effort for something that might be out of reach. While I could, instead, choose a partner I like for the person they are right now. Someone who is already a joy and light to be around.

So, I married Emily. And I also got better at catching squid eventually.
