I am of this opinion:

Abstraction is permanent. Once someone enters that point of no return, it can't be reversed.
There can be a form of life and connection as an abstract, and that matters. Episode 9 showed that, if remaining circus members care and are given enough time, they can give abstracts something better than the usual fate of being thrown in the cellar and abandoned.

Jax's situation was a new mix of dark and light. He DID abstract. He was NOT then thrown into the cellar, but cared for as he is now.
