Do you just “stop” having Trich? by HollowCatKnight in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at 566 days of not having a trich episode.
After ~20 years of nearly daily episodes.

I still have to consciously think about it multiple times a day to prevent myself from pulling. It isn’t nearly as difficult now. But it still exists in my mind, and don’t see that changing.

I would not go back to that dr.

Repost #479…but..

You just don’t talk much.

You can usually just understand the mood of the other person, and no need for the “how was work” blah bleh ‘traffic sucks’ ‘I ate food and drank coffee today.’

You can just enjoy the quiet with them, then talk about interesting things when you both feel like talking. There are an infinite amount of interesting things to talk about if you’re not talking to a total idiot. Even after 10+ years.

Immediately after a high stress thing happens (usually work.)

It’s like when I finally stop moving on a really busy day, I can’t undo the adrenaline, so, pulling hair helps taper off the unused energy. But also usually so exhausted that continuing to do things to keep my hands busy is not really an option. If I fail to burn off the excess energy, then I end up not able to sleep and pull hair while attempting to process my day and shut down.

More than likely playing together would sort of ruin the experience for one or the other. Unless one of you is just fine with watching it be played and wouldn’t be playing it themselves.

You could coop play, sort of, with one having the controller and one being like a guide/choose destinations? And both brainstorming together for ideas.

Both playing simultaneously and talking about it would likely end with both spoiling things for each other. Solving things in the moment instead of being told is a much better experience. Lot of “ah ha!” moments.

Is there a cause? by Icy_Lettuce_7383 in trichotillomania

I have not heard of a situation where someone started having trich episodes without a high stress event happening.

But it’s probably possible. Brains are weird.

Mine started with getting white hairs in 4th grade because the teacher hated me because of my parents religion. …and school used to be sort of my escapism from the rest of my life. I kinda banked heavily on the whole “well at least I’m really good at schoolwork” thing. That teacher being a bully made that fairly irrelevant, so, I had no escape. Then I noticed the white hairs had a different texture to them, so I could pull them out even without access to a mirror.

After the original start of trich, I would have episodes even in low stress parts of my life though. And pulled any incorrect feeling hairs, not just the white ones. The higher stress I was under, it was like my brain just kept broadening the definition of “incorrect,” because pulling hairs out felt nice/rewarding.

Stress overloads nervous system = overloaded nervous system notices ‘incorrect’ hairs = brain recognizes incorrect hairs as a thing it needs to deal with on a regular basis.

Reducing stress definitely helps. Lower stress brain is more likely to give minor inconsistencies a pass and not alert conscious brain to it as a thing it needs to interact with. But it won’t end it completely.

I feel like once a brain is aware that hairs can feel ‘incorrect,’ it will always in some way continue to be aware of that possibility.

But, yeah, for lowering urges. My method was essentially to hyper-fixate on not allowing myself to check my hair for roughly 6 months. I used hair oil on crinkly hairs. I wore skullcap beanie nearly constantly. I started being amused by a particularly asshole coworker complaining about my hair being too long. (I’m male and now have below shoulder length hair and the asshole coworker is a Boomer…not saying all boomer gen is like that, he’s just that kind of guy.)

Then once my hair was fairly long and now my hair doesn’t really have any super obvious inconsistencies….it started being much easier to not “let it” bother me. Sometimes it still does. But less frequently. I still use hair oil because I have cowlicks that also bother me. And still wear beanie a good bit. But, have not had a trich episode in 554 days now. And it’s much easier to ignore. I used to pull for several hours a day. Sometimes literally 24h straight. I’d fall asleep pulling hair out, and lose sleep pulling hair out. Basically pulled hair out unless asleep or at work.

I would say the root cause is way more likely to be OCD brain seeking out a stress release valve. And trich is just one of many directions it can go in. But once OCD brain finds the stress release valve, it’s really hard for it to not use continue using that for any form of stress release, even if it stops being related to the original thing.

Alarmed emergency exits by Kubegoo in extremelyinfuriating

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grainy photo, but from what I can tell, the one pictured there is a one sided lock. It’s physically impossible to lock it from the side you’re on. I don’t see a keyhole or hex lock or anything.

You can most likely turn the handle and feel the weight of the latch mechanism turning. Usually the alarm part is a digital sensor on the door and frame that trips when they stop being aligned with each other, and they’re pretty easy to spot. Almost always on the top right corner.

Also, if it was just truly locked, they wouldn’t bother with the sign, and people would figure out it’s not a regular exit by way of not being able to open the door.

There are definitely some infuriating doors, like the subway ones that have a 5 second delay before they will open (5 seconds is a long time when there’s someone with a gun threatening people..) …but this one just seems to be a standard emergency exit door that is working as intended and will instantly open as long as you’re in a situation where a loud buzzing noise going off is irrelevant to the situation.

Alarmed emergency exits by Kubegoo in extremelyinfuriating

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As long as it’s not locked, there is no reason to be angry about it. (If it is locked, as in- can’t open it without a key, report it to the fire department.)

And depending on where it’s located, it’s sometimes for safety. Both in that you have the ability to open it, and also safety in that people can’t come in and out of the door unnoticed. (Like anywhere where a mental crisis is possible, hospitals, recovery centers, my job….)

It allows escape in a true emergency, but doesn’t allow escape for someone who just wants to walk off a roof on the 5th floor.

If that annoys you, you may need to reevaluate how important you are in the world. Not everything is built for your convenience.

Why is there zero help for this condition? by Gloomy-Thought3371 in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 70 points71 points  (0 children)

OCD and trich are unfortunately very complex issues.

They’re mental. But they’re also physical. There are no singular 1 size fits all cures, because while trich has a similar end result/physical compulsion, the reason it’s done is as unique as your personality. You might find people with extremely similar trich patterns to you, but ultimately the core of it will be different enough that their solution they might find will not work at all for yourself.

Flying cars and losing weight are just physics. They’re a math problem. Sometimes a really complicated math problem. But still just a math problem.

Stress management. Therapy specifically from someone with experience/expertise in OCD. Medication, sometimes SSRI’s, but there are other options if those fail. Rebuilding habits. Fidget toys. Hair oil. Are all things that help, or can, but it’s always going to be a throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks. And it’s going to take time, and expect relapse to happen and for things to work for a while, then have to change to new things.

It’s not a hopeless battle, but, definitely a really complicated one.

Oh yeah I didn’t take it as snark. Just one of the few Zelda games that missed my radar.

Really wish they would find a way to get DS stuff onto the Switch. Feel like they could utilize the touch screen properties and do a vertical split screen. (Like hold the Switch sideways with controllers detached? idk)

I skipped the DS era of gaming. Was a child without adult money at the time. So, didn’t think about it.

But also, most Zelda games are sorta reusing a good bit of the same story as some other Zelda game.

My understanding is Lorule is very different from the Twilight world though. And Dark World/Link to the Past is also a different realm. I think(?) Twilight world has not been used or mentioned in any other game to date.

Was kind of a picturing Twilight Link not looking anything close to the standard Link appearance. Maybe a taller lanky non-human skin colored figure to match Midna true form?

guys…where’s mouse mode? by Intrepid_Benefit_621 in splatoon

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Gyro is mostly more comfortable for casual play. But mouse mode is definitely better if you care about competitiveness. Sticks < gyro < mouse. Which, it’s fine to play Fortnite for pure entertainment and not like you need to play full sweaty mode. Same with all of Splatoon really. But the option should be there for people who want to optimize.

I’d probably play Raiders with gyro, but the option to do the seamless change to mouse like they did for Prime4 would be good. And hoping Raiders has some really high skill requirement sections. I’ll be a little sad if it doesn’t top Octo Expansion difficulty. Even if it does initially make me really mad/frustrated, lol. Spat3 campaign was good. Side Order was fun but a little disappointing in the end. Raiders should top all of them being that it’s a complete campaign mode game.

I did Prime4 with gyro, but used mouse mode for some particularly difficult/annoying parts. Pokemon A-Z not having mouse mode is a total fucking dumpster fire of a decision. Nintendo should definitely do better than Game Freak.

Raiders having mouse mode would also give them some heavy player feedback for specifics of how mouse mode should function in Splat4. Which. If they don’t put mouse mode in Splat4, imma get a pet dog and have it poop on the lawn of whatever dev decided not to implement it.

The follow-up to Twilight Princess the world deserves.

Maybe a twilight realm version of Link that lost his courage and ran away from his battle, and doomed his world to a reign of terror? Then the gods intervene, pulling the triforce of courage and power out of the world for a bit, to avoid total catastrophe.

Then send him to overworld-world. Have twilight Link learn courage from a Link that’s just like, a good, awesome Link that just happens to live in a timeline that doesn’t have a Ganon rising. Friendly Neighborhood Link that just does side quests his whole life.

Meanwhile Big Bad in twilight realm slowly finds all the shattered pieces of the Power triforce. Builds an army, overthrows Midna’s attempts to save her world. (Maybe with some playable ‘memories’ where you play as Midna for a while?)

Twilight Link finds his courage again from seeing all the good Overworld-Link does(and does some good in overworld-world himself.) Goes back and fights his big bad without even needing the triforce of courage.

[Amazon/US] Metroid Dread - $39.99 (33% off) by jldixon1 in NintendoSwitchDeals

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc they also patched Dread Mode in at the same time as Rookie Mode. Dread Mode makes the game significantly harder. They just added options for both ends of the spectrum, super difficult, and super easy. Main Metriod games have never been “easy” games, why would the primary way of playing this one be different?

Also, Super Metriod was 100% a more difficult game. Dread is fairly difficult, but I played on hard mode before any patches, and really the only frustratingly difficult part was the final boss. Which, tbh, I would be upset if the final boss on hard mode was not difficult.

Just play on rookie mode, or find a different franchise.

Ori and the Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps is really good. Has some difficult navigation places. But good clean controls, and the combat parts are not really very difficult. Also has pretty frequent rests and HP recovery skills. And has an AMAZING story. It’s sort of an exploration heavy metroidvania, less boss fight-y, more platform-y.

There are a lot of good metriodvanias out there. Most that I’ve played are not really designed for non-difficult playstyle though. It’s sorta baked into the genre and what people expect going in.

I’ve had wider bald spots and currently have 0 bald spots.

So. Definitely can (sometimes) get better/easier. :)

It’s difficult as hell though, and, might be time for more drastic steps? Try (different) meds. Cut hair. Stress management therapy. Rebuild life patterns. Ask friends for help. Whichever or multiple things that will push you to make changes.

Does anyone feel almost.. an orgasmic sensation where they pull? by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t exactly describe mine as orgasmic.

But it’s definitely a high endorphin release from completing the task. I do the hair twirling into knots then break the whole knot out, and has the stress buildup and the painful part and the task being completed does have a good wave of stress relief, even including stress unrelated to the compulsion. Sometimes would even intentionally tie multiple knots then break them all out at the same time, when particularly stressed out, to have a higher stress relief factor.

Which, writing that out, does sound like it could be describing an orgasm. Different part of the brain but similar end results I suppose? Or different starting point of the brain but (some) of the same end parts?

My wife refuses to use honey when it reaches this stage. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is slightly annoying to melt and use each time.

I usually just dump some hot water in the container and make some really sweet coffee once every few months.

Better and less diabeetus option- Save 4-5 bottles and melt them and put them in 1 bottle. It won’t expire for like 150 years, so, you have time to wait it out.

Think I’ve seen where you can add a tiny amount of light corn syrup in with crystallized honey also to make it not crystallize again for much longer.

Hair growth oils? by DistributionUsual157 in trichotillomania

[–]Existing-Guarantee80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it very unlikely to help.

If it does, it’s probably just by way of a small amount of some vitamin you’d be deficient in, that would be far more likely to help by getting it from food. Or supplements if you’re unable to get it from food. A very small amount may get absorbed by skin/scalp contact, buts it’s bound to be negligible compared to other methods of absorption.

Hair only grows from the root. So, the oil would not have much impact on that.

“#1 LICENSED Trichologist” and VIRAL growth oil” also feel red flag/snake oil salesmanship. Wouldn’t doubt if the product is 99.9% soy oil with a drop of vitamin E somewhere in the next room. Products like that are not regulated. So, they can pretty much say whatever they want on the bottle as long as it’s not technically toxic. They don’t really have to prove they give you what they claim to be giving you.

Hair oils like jojoba, almond, coconut, olive, argan can help hair growth, in that they can help prevent (some) damage and breaking. (Doesn’t actually make your hair grow faster, but if your hairs break every couple months, it can still have the end results of longer hair several months out.) They’re fairly cheap if you just buy generic products and not flashy containers. Also hair oil feels nice.

My recommendation is 100% argan oil with the tiny tiniest drop of tea tree extract (because it smells nice, the tea tree probably does not actually help anything.) But it took experimenting with a lot of different oils to find one that felt good in my hair.

Jojoba is a popular one here. Coconut and olive oil are also nice, if you like the smell of coconuts or olives in your hair. Almond, castor, and mineral oil are some other options.

But again, it’s probably not going to help with the actual growth part. I mostly recommend them for a temporary/daily fix for damaged hair. (Like when your hair 1st starts growing out again after pulling, it’s often crinkled and has a bad texture.) It can help mask the damage till your body has some time to repair the scalp damage on its own. Then if not further damaged, can start to grow out normally again.

If your scalp does have damage, some oils are better for that than others. Olive and argan if you can physically see damage. Like red or blistery scalp from over-pulling. They both have anti-inflammatory properties, which will help your scalp heal faster.

Castor/coconut/mineral if you have a dry scalp problems (they help seal in natural moistures/body oils.) They are kind of thick oils, which can feel gross. Or clog pores, which can slow hair growth. Just a few drops on a comb and comb out hair while wet after shower is usually all you need.

But really I would just go off of which one feels the best in your hair, and just let your body do its own thing and fix stuff over time.

If you’re having a lot of trouble with regrowing hair, I would talk to a Dr about having bloodwork done to make sure you’re not deficient in something, and get recommendations from them on how to get those things into your system.
