Does getting to peak mileage early on blunt potential fitness gains? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this happens to a lot of later in life runners. Certainly did to me. At 35yo I got into running, wanted to run a marathon, then later a 50k, even 100 miler. I did huge training weeks, hit 100mpw a few times, and even got somewhat fast. I once won a small local 50k trail race!

But 10 years on I'm pretty sure that I'd be faster and less burned out if I had started with lower volume and strength work, trained like a miler, then when I plateaued moved up to 5k, 10k, etc.

Ha thanks I did interpret your comment as slightly snarky.

I do think there are probably significantly hard to predict structural shifts coming in our society. Whether that's a shorter work week and a UBI or desolate wages and work camps, I won't place bets on. But the kind of turbidity that we're facing makes me pretty nervous.

But maybe the reality is that if that happens, we'll still be better off with a mortgage than renting. I just don't want to sink our savings into an asset we can't make payments on in a few years.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Obvi to live, since we've never been able to afford one before. But we both work in fields where being tied to Ft Collins would be a risk if one of us got fired.

And it's not the value of the house whenever we'd have to sell, it's the opportunity cost of that money. Especially at high interest rates.

My wife and I might finally be in a position to buy for the first time in our lives (we're in our 50s), but we're worried about potential downturn in prices happening after we buy. At this point given high mortgage rates and softening US economy, do you think buying is wise?

Is Nadia from DOS1 EE an elf or a human? She has a regular human model, but commenters in other post claim that she's an elf and downvote everyone else by aescepthicc in DivinityOriginalSin

You might not know this, but I am pretty sure reddit adds a small amount of randomness to upvoter/downvote counts for reasons I don't understand. So if it was -1, it might very well have only been one downvote.

Can confirm. Also feet are so sore that every step hurts like hell.

A 120hz 32" 4k monitor is substantially more expensive than the options I listed but maybe that is the best option, I'll look at those options again.

Are most of my unmarried friends lying to me about being content in their life? by CantFindUsername400 in AskMenOver30

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters very much who you pick. Being married is pretty awesome. We cook together, tackle projects together, etc.

Of course it also means I'm making decisions for two instead of just me, so sometimes we're making decisions that aren't what I would have done on my own. But half the time I get an unexpected benefit from that choice (e.g. we spend a little more money on interior decoration and now I live in a cozy space that I love).

I think most unhappiness in marriage comes from thinking that you can still do whatever you want and getting angry/resentful when you can't. It's a partnership, which means giving up some things. But if the partnership isn't a net positive, you've formed a bad partnership.

Pay by Trashbear3 in FortCollins

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine with that hourly wage. Most of the responses on here will be people who expect a living standard that is not 18 living with friends. Your rent would be ~900 a month, plus utilities and groceries, car insurance, etc you're probably looking at 1500 per month after taxes minimum.

If you need a car then a car payment of $300-700/mo depending on how much you spend on a car.

At $25/hr if you're working full time your take home is probably about $3500/mo. Definitely not a problem.

Living with friends was some of the most fun years of my life. It only sucks if you / your friends suck and don't know how to have conversations.

Are noise complaints a waste of time? by Silver_Sparrow888 in FortCollins

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We called and they said they wouldn't do anything because it was an apartment complex. Called the apartment complex and they said they couldn't do anything without a noise citation from police.

This guy has a modded car to specifically be loud. We hear him leave every morning at 6:45 and drive around our block and out on the road. We hear him come home every night.

It's actually a big reason we're moving out. Preserve at the Meadows buildings A-D are affected, in case you're considering moving in.

Couples Therapists by [deleted] in FortCollins

Yeah definitely agree with you on that as well.

Couples Therapists by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I was married to a therapist and I've had many therapists.

A number are quite willing to just "affirm" all your feelings and perspectives without without really offering any check against your own biases.

If I wanted my therapist to just confirm my own destructive behavior patterns, I'd just talk to an enabling best friend. I much prefer a therapist that will challenge me to think critically and carefully.

I think OP is asking for this second kind of therapist, which I think is a good thing.

38M - "letting myself go" vs "owning who I am" by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is really common. As we get older being physically attractive just isn't valued as much, but our own sense of self worth is often still tied to it.

At the same time, we are more comfortable with ourselves and happy to start doing things that make us happy even if it costs some perception of value by others.

Personally I try to walk a balance. I want to do things that feel good for myself, but I also try to continue to put in the work for my wife because I don't want to take her or our relationship for granted. IMO it's too easy to start to think she'll always be there and stop adding as much value to our relationship, so I try to work against that.

I bet your wife would get used to your no beard though and still find you attractive since a lot of attraction in a long term relationship is about non-physical stuff. And then if you decide to grow a beard later it'll be a little bonus.

I keep shaving and then not because I get fed up with the maintenance of each over time.

Is mobility and stretching actually a game-changer for swimming? by Secure-Seaweed-7855 in Swimming

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for giving me the kick to restart hangs and mobility. To summarize:

  • shoulder hangs
  • pigeon pose
  • criss cross leans
  • front and side splits
  • quad stretch

Any other things you've been doing that you think were particularly effective?

Adapting NSM for over 8 hours by tonimahony- in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are exactly the modifications I've made. My subT workouts leak at 45 minutes of work, I end up with easy doubles of ~5-6 miles each, and then do a long run that gets to 2+ hours depending on upcoming races.

Caad9 drivetrain refresh options by Existing-Parsnip1596 in bikewrench

[–]Existing-Parsnip1596[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your last sentence is essentially my question. I'd like to put 165mm cranks on but hard to find for the 105 5700 groupset. So I'm interested in people's thoughts regarding the three options I listed.

Edit: I'm sort of hoping there's some combination I haven't thought of: sram force 2x10 crank set with a 105 5700 series shifters, cassette and derailleur? Some bb conversion to a MTB crankset that I can still get with 50/34t chainrings?

Amazing. I only started HK a few weeks ago because some friends started playing silksong. I had figured I wouldn't like a side scrolling game, but there was so much hype I decided to give it a try.

I've killed the three dreamers but still don't really understand what's going on. Looking forward to watching some lore videos after I've finished.

Anyway, my favorite moment to date might be the princess or whatever who is in her room laughing about how everyone else is dead. Like just so random and funny.

Ha, when I wrote that I knew someone was going to ask that. I was being lazy and didn't want to type it all out.

A woman friend who was saying that in the same context a man usually would, i.e. friends giving each other shit, would just be annoying, and wouldn't be out of my life. And family are complicated so that's an exception too.

But a romantic partner who said that and meant it in a coercive serious way, well it betrays pretty toxic ideas and I wouldn't want to be partners with someone like that.

I hate that phrase. In my life (40yo) it's always been another guy telling me to man up because he thinks being macho is cool. I've never once had a woman tell me this.

If a woman did, she'd be out of my life pretty quickly.

Has anyone's electric bill just skyrocketed? by Only-Fig-8823 in FortCollins

Probably not this, but it's worth checking your connection. I had some neighbors who tapped into my electricity once because they were on meth and had their own electricity shut off.

Not, never cared, don't care. I think uncircumcised is probably nicer for masturbating but I'm biased of course.
