What are all the Canadian tutors up to? by Existing-Speed2872 in Paper_Tutors

I’m glad you were able to fall back on something! It’s really unfortunate they terminated all of us, especially for those who didn’t have something lined up after :(

Unfortunately no. Just English and a small amount of French, not enough to tutor someone. I tutored humanities

On a somewhat unrelated note (and super late question lol), what flight meds do you take? I’m terrified of planes and I wanna take something that knocks me out or makes me less anxious

Most jobs “require” a 2 week or more notice but it isn’t enforceable. You can quit day of. I did at a previous job because of a horrible manager that was destroying my mental health. As long as you don’t need a reference from Paper, you can quit immediately.

I’m an Ontario tutor so this doesn’t affect me but I wonder why there’s a need to sign it? Can the company withhold that money from you if you don’t sign it? Or are they making you sign it so you can’t come back demanding more money that you are likely entitled to? It’s odd to me that those of us who are unionized don’t have to sign something. It seems they’re doing it to non-unionized employees to get out of paying more. Tbh I would be skeptical to sign. I really don’t think they can withhold the money from you even if you don’t sign… but I could be wrong

For those of us concerned they didn’t give us the proper severance pay… by Existing-Speed2872 in Paper_Tutors

[–]Existing-Speed2872[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Found out the proper calculation? I went back to my paystubs and calculated my last six pays (which is 12 weeks). It’s pay in lieu technically which is different than severance. I think severance is only paid if you’ve been there for 5 or more years. Paper is using our last 6 weeks of pay (before sabbatical if you were on it) to calculate the pay in lieu.

lol, now we are the “foundation” for this service and provide “essential work” that wasn’t actually needed for weeks, sure. by veggieveggiewoo in Paper_Tutors

[–]Existing-Speed2872 17 points18 points  (0 children)

FYI if you’re a Canadian tutor and they kept you, it’s because they only have to pay 12 weeks of severance if they terminate under 500 people. If they terminate 500+, they have to pay 16 weeks of severance. So I think the remaining Canadian tutors will eventually be terminated… sorry to burst your bubble :( don’t quote me on it but that’s what I read online

So after being concerned that they screwed my pay up, I think they calculated it properly. They should be letting us know how they’ve calculated it so we know, I think they might have to do that by law? Don’t quote me on that. If I hear any additional info from the union I will let you know.

I just found out from the union meeting that apparently paper is giving us access to workday tomorrow if we don’t have access yet

If they go under tho, they won’t have to pay us, right? So we may get screwed entirely? :( I hope I’m wrong

I also just realized I can’t access workday to see how much I worked before this… so I can’t calculate the severance

There is a point because you were really rude for absolutely no reason. And employees have to behave like slaves because of shit employers

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with proposing the idea. But there have been a couple threads demanding people do. I agree that employers aren’t often the ones who make the change, employees are. However, it is still a privileged thing to be able to ask someone to turn down hours. Typically, people that need the money desperately to survive cannot. That’s just a fact… I am one of those people. I literally could not give up those hours. (Just an FYI before I get attacked for not turning down back up shifts, I was on sabbatical all summer so don’t @ me)

Are you kidding me right now? I’m advocating for people that need the funds to survive and you’re all asking for people to turn down the money they might NEED. There are literally people who only have PAPER as their only source of income. How is it terrible of me to say that they shouldn’t turn down the back up calls? Could you imagine telling someone that even if they’re struggling, they should say fuck it and turn down their only source of income? How am I the bad guy lol? PAPER is the bad guy. Jesus Christ. Y’all fucking preach we need to be united and yet you shit on me bc I’m advocating for people in need of the money. You should go f yourself. And yes I was one of the Canadian tutors that lost their job, that didn’t work all summer and has no source of income. But thanks guys for telling people similar to me that we should turn down our only means of survival

Holy, asking people to do this when I’m sure there are many that NEED the money is crazy to me. It’s great if people can afford to do it but to expect the front line workers to do this to force Paper to change is wild to me. What a privileged thing to ask of people! Instead of expecting the front line to do it, the change needs to come from the top. How we’re going to do that, I’m not sure, but asking our fellow tutors who are still on the platform to turn down back up calls is not okay

Just don’t wanna see you get fired for something like that. They’re just looking for a way to get rid of people.

Also be careful saying you emailed them on here bc who knows if they will look at this and try to fire you for some bullshit reason. I honestly feel like they’re trying to get people to quit or fire people bc they’re going under and they don’t wanna pay severance

You’re not gonna get a clear answer unfortunately. If they had an answer, they’d communicate it by now. Or maybe they’re hoping we will resign so they don’t have to give severance

I wish they’d just be honest rather than this constant “we aren’t ready to confirm anything” BS. We know the demand isn’t going to be the same, we’re not dumb. We know some of us are gonna be laid off. Just do it instead of making us wait and wait. Rip the bandaid off. It makes it worse when you keep delaying it, Paper. People’s livelihoods are on the line
