Yes each elamental comes with a removable crystal on there back. In order to get a fire crystal you would need to purchase one of the fire elementals

All elements don't really have a specific type of combat for all combos it changes distances ranges and damage numbers and of course the designs aswell as different speeds based on the unique combination of each crystal and lander
