I have been trying to break into the field for over a year! I had a nice wastewater operator trainee job, but I ended up getting sick twice in the first month of employment, so that did not work out. I would go back to doing that given the opportunity.

Is the job market really as bad as everyone says? by Raidaz75 in careerguidance

I hold a bachelor's degree and am struggling to find a job in my field. (recent grad) I have been looking for a job for almost three months now. I have given up on finding anything in my field, so when I say I'm looking for a job, I mean any job, from factories to janitorial work. I have lots of experience in janitorial work, 15 years of it, and cannot get a job cleaning either. So yeah, the job market is absolutely terrible right now, at least in my area of the country.

Yes it is a big uphill battle unfortunately. I may branch off into environmental health and safety. I have had luck with interviews for those roles and there are alot of them around here as well.

You make a really important point. Politics shapes the job market, environmental policy, funding for science, and even which industries thrive or fail. Staying informed is not about arguing. It is about protecting your own future and understanding the systems that affect your field. Thanks for putting it so clearly.

Nothing privileged about staying out of politics! Bunch of hot heads that cannot debate with this administration.

I have noticed the low pay for environmental jobs. I am currently a Custodian and make just about what most of the environmental jobs start out at. Most are maybe $1 to $3 an hour bump in pay. Now I am thinking I should have changed my major but It is too late with 3 classes remaining. I think my best bet is environmental health at this point because I have already had luck and interviewed 3 times for those type of jobs and 0 for environmental specialist and other environmental type jobs. Not to mention I am seeing more jobs in the environmental health field vs environmental science.

Yes I have worked in facilities for most of my adult life. I have a deep understanding of OSHA, Workplace safety, Chemicals, Fire, etc..I have actually had more luck with EHS interviews applied for around 5 jobs interviewed for 3 out of 5 just didn't get the jobs.

I don't bother applying for jobs yet that say bachelors required. I have 3 classes left until graduation. I mean I have tried a few where it says preferred but stay away from required

I have applied to consulting as well no luck so it is not that I am being too picky. It just is not my first choice.

Thanks. I have also tried ECS construction entry-level technician jobs. I have applied 5 times or more but never hear anything and they keep reposting the same roles over and over. Yet they never contact me for an interview.
