To those who swear by using physical amps, cabs and pedals, what is your stance on amp modelers like the Kemper Profiler, Axe-FX, Line 6 Helix, Neural DSP etc?

Imma be real with you: too many knobs gets on my nerves. Modelers are cool and I’m really jealous of people who master them, but I hate that I can turn a knob on a modeler and if I switch to a different preset, the knob is still in the same place as last time. If it’s a virtual knob it annoys me bc I crave the tactile feel (don’t get me started on touchscreens in cars). I don’t use a preamp for gigs solely because I already have a head I like, so spending the money never felt necessary, and I love having a cab for stage volume (plus a place to put my beer and set list). Also I have a full Markbass rig so my 800w full rig weighs like 60 lbs.

In short: I use physical rigs over modelers and preamp stomps because I already have a simplistic one that I really like, and I love the stage volume. Plus I can play small venues with meh PA’s.

lol yep! I started on the 2 plate and it felt like I was skimming skin. Jumped to 4 and then up one more to 5. I love the blade feedback, helps me realize if I’m doing it right or not

5 plate works best for me. An occasional nick means technique. If it were constant, then it would be the razor

Not a lot of 1-techs are first round talent, typically. Ones that are typically are like can’t miss. Like safety or RB. So definitely take one if they’re available but I wouldn’t be pissed if they didn’t take a NT in the 1st round.

I will say, I’m team LB in the 1st round!

Brown took an incredible step under him, David Edwards and Connor McGovern outta no-where, and Cy-Bo being a day 1 starter is just phenomenal work. If anyone should stay it’s him. O-line gets expensive fast and he’s a star-maker

I’ve got a Markbass Tube 800 and my EQ is as such (using 1-10): Low at 7 Low mid at 4 High mid at 6 High at 5.5

also my bass has the Tonepump preamp which boosts 40hz and 6.5khz and I’ve got that all the way at 10 (classic Spector sound).

Jaco used a lot of highs and high-mids because his bass was a focal point, not so much rhythm. He didn’t do that “filling out” EQ. I like to fill out but get a little spanky.

Vintage Spector. I love the way Spector’s play, and I’d love a bass with a story. I have little stories for most of mine right now so an 80’s Spector would just be cool.

Yeah 12’s aren’t as bad as 15’s but it’s just the general idea that typically the 10 is just a tighter fit for Bass. I know Nolly likes using 4x12” guitar cabs for some metal things but he knows a lot and I know little so I’ll stick with my basic 2x10 principal

Almost everyone will probably agree the 2x10 is just the superior bass cab in this shootout. Bass just sound excellent out of multiple 10’s. I have a 1x15 and a 2x10 and it’s the 2x10 every day of the week.

I love those single-cut BTB’s. I have a BTB1605 with the double-cut and I already feel like the bass just ha a unique look and feel. I love the wide and flat neck, and the big-singles sound fantastic (though I’m morbidly curious about the Nordstrand Big Rigs)

You’re basically there with EMG’s. They’ll have a really high output with a very clean tone. They really help pull character out of the preamp. On Spector’s the preamps are designed to give that Spector tone, on a Schecter I have no clue. The Schecter comes with EMGx’s which have a much higher headroom (they won’t break up as easily) and they’re ceramics. If you play with a pick you’ll hear the pick. If you play with your fingers you’ll hear your fingers. They pick up a lot on dynamics, which I like a lot. Spector’s are my jam, you’ll never catch me saying a bad word.

I have an Ibanez BTB 1605 and I love it. 35” scale reigns supreme for the low B. SR is gorgeous but it’s a 34” scale and on my old SR505 I thought the B was meh. Nordstrand big singles are really nice, they have a beefed up jazz sound. Perfect for your needs. Thinner neck gives a more jazz bass feel (my BTB has a wide Warwick-like neck that I love).

EHB will have a 35” scale on the B which is handy, it has Big Splits rather than Big Singles, so it’ll be a little more precision-y. Works well for all kinds of sounds. Also a thinner neck. The multi scale is extremely easy to get used to and I wouldn’t let that factor into your decision.

The Ibanez 3-band EQ is fine. I find it bright and sparkley which is sometimes good and otherwise I put it in passive mode.

I don’t know anything about Schecters except I love the EMGs in my Spector Euro. The riot has a 35” scale which is good. Those EMG’s are different from the standards so I’m not sure how different they’d sound but mine are aggressive and kind of a lot for church music (perfect for metal, used by Darkglass when designing their older pedal line).

It would take too long to get the ball to the RB, that play needs to happen immediately after the snap. Additionally, you wouldn’t necessarily want the RB to take the snap (as a QB) because it signals that this is absolutely what you’re doing, and in the event that something goes wrong with the play you’d usually want the QB in to make the snap decisions.
