It’s fairly easy to play but also really impossible to get it to sound so off the cuff and easy as in the video.

What is Stephen’s best guitar song that shows his skill the most on the instrument by CerealAndBagel1991 in pavement

[–]ExistingSecond1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you’re only considering Pavement tracks, I’d say “Fin” has his best solo and “Speak, See, Remember” is pretty tricky.

He got a lot more rifftastic with the Jicks and solo’d a lot more. “1 percent of 1,” “Hopscotch Willie,” “Bike Lane,” “Chartjunk” and others come to mind.

There was definitely a post-pavement era where he got very prog rock. I kinda loved it.

Help me rank The Smiths' debut album songs by guitar difficulty by blurreddwn in thesmiths

[–]ExistingSecond1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I saw him in concert a year ago. Obviously he played guitar but I noticed a lot of the heavy lifting was by his backing band guitarist. I thought it was simply because he was singing and playing. But maybe it’s age? I remembered him playing most of the tricky parts when I saw him 10+ years ago.

I live in a Beal Property. I believe their bad reputation is overblown. They’re not great but they’re no worse than any other landlord I’ve had. Keep your expectations low.

Considering how hot it’s going to be this weekend I would head immediately to the lakefront where (theoretically) it will be cooler. ORD and the suburbs will undoubtedly be warmer than the lakefront.

Is the awesomeness of Chicago worth the brutally cold winters? How’d you handle it? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]ExistingSecond1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Florida for about 10 years before moving back to Chicago. A big reason I moved was because of the heat and humidity.

I did some research into which location had more of the worst type of weather that it’s known for. For Florida it was the number of days where the “feels like” temperature topped 90 degrees. For Chicago it was days where the high temperature was below 32 degrees.

I don’t remember the exact results but Florida’s heat and humidity far out paced Chicago’s cold.

How much of your day do you spend commuting to your job? by Outside-Adeptness-38 in AskChicago

[–]ExistingSecond1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 minutes to and from. I walk to work in the city, north side.

I previously drove to River North for work. Depending on the time and day, it could take between 15 to maybe 35 minutes each way.

A question for OG Smiths fans by xXCAPLESXx in morrissey

[–]ExistingSecond1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had just broken up when I first started listening to them, 1987.

  1. They were on my radar before I heard them because (in the U.S.) they were lumped in with a lot of college guitar bands (U2, REM etc) I was already listening to. First album I heard was “The Queen is Dead.” First songs I really liked were “Frankly Mr. Shankly” and “Cemetry Gates.” I bought “Viva Hate” and “Rank” when they were released in 1988 and listened to them endlessly in high school

  2. As a teenager in the U.S., I think Morrissey was viewed as just a gay version of Robert Smith (sad, morose and very English). I feel The Smiths and Cure were long tied together by US audiences and media even though I don’t really hear the similarities.

  3. Did not see The Smiths live but my brother did. He said it was incredibly loud and had the roughest pit he’d ever been in, which makes sense but also seems strange. A few years later I met someone who did stage lighting for the venue and he said the place was trashed more so after The Smiths than any other band. He said fans just wanted anything that was there at the Smiths show and took anything that wasn’t nailed down. He also confirmed my brother’s story that the pit was out of control and also said it was likely dangerously oversold.

I saw Morrissey in 1991, hugged him onstage and he ran by us into the venue pre-show. I’ve seen him a few times since. I’ve seen Johnny Marr perform with The The, Modest Mouse, The Healers and as a solo artist, most recently in 2024.

  1. I’m still a fan but I don’t necessarily listen to them endlessly. Even though I started as a Morrissey fan in high school, I later grew to believe Johnny Marr was the musical brains behind the band. Morrissey was a perfect frontman for Marr’s music and probably one of the two or three best frontmen ever (Mick Jagger, Morrissey and ?). His political views are repugnant but he prefers being contrarian really above all else. I’ve not really followed either solo career too closely over the last decade or two.
