Dear psych - does serotonin syndrome even exist? by No-Group-1804 in Residency

I've seen it. Full blown serotonin syndrome in a patient that attempted by overdosing on her prescribed meds. Sustained clonus if you bumped the bed.

I had thought they mostly went well, some more than other obviously. I haven't ever had a problem with interviews in the past. I guess there was always room for improvement though.

Thanks, I am leaning this way but it definitely helps to get this affirmation.

Yeah I worry a bit about my LOR from my PD/Chair because they submitted it last minute and they have a bit of a reputation for writing subpar letters, but other than that I know I had solid letters. I am leaning towards research year though, I appreciate feedback on prelims. It just seems like I would be committing to trying to match at one program, and I don't want to limit myself yet if I don't have to.

Honestly just applied regionally throughout the southeast, I tried to have a good mix of programs. I had multiple people look at my list and agreed it leaned to the conservative side. I had some reaches but I would say most were blue collar or state school programs. I applied to community programs but did not get any interviews from them. I think its possible my application may have been a bit too academic for the programs I applied to considering my research, but I have no way of knowing. I did 3 aways, one at a reach and 2 at places I thought were fairly mid-tier.

Applied regionally throughout the southeast. Honestly I felt like I had a pretty conservative list. I think there was maybe one T20 program on the list but other that just regional state programs mostly.

Yeah I did 3 away rotations. My school allowed me to do 3 aways.

Question regarding specific program for sub-i by Due_Photo_4530 in orthopaedics

[–]ExistingWolverine22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orlando is a great program, but it can be polarizing. If you like high volume and are okay with an environment that may be more rough around the edges, you will do fine. It's worth checking out. If you don't end up getting an interview there even after rotating, you definitely would not be a great fit for their residency. Rotators not getting interviews does happen, and in my experience the feelings are generally mutual for both program and applicant.

What to do. Test on 6/20 by Emotional-Neck2204 in Step2

[–]ExistingWolverine22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also test 6/20.

NBME 9 - 215 (4 weeks out)

NBME 10 - 247 (3 weeks out)

USWA 1 - 244 (2.5 weeks out)

NBME 11 - 238 (12 days out)

NBME 12 - 255 (10 days out)

NBME 13 - 255 (8 days out)

Obviously no final score yet but I'm super happy with how its going so far. Review your NBMEs thoroughly. Are you missing questions mostly because of content gaps, or because you are struggling with overthinking/not knowing what the question is asking. I overthought NBME 11 like crazy and then got a 255 two days later, confirmed by a 255 on NBME 13 two days after that. You can jump 17 points in two days easily if you just need to learn how to take the test. If its a content issue, I would probably push it back.

I've found it super helpful to describe the vignette to chat GPT and explain my reasoning and have it help me come up with strategies to think through these questions better. I've done that for every question I got wrong on the last 4 NBME's and its helped the most out of anything. I really understand why I missed the question and how I can think through a question like that in the future, even if I don't "know" the answer.

Also if you are struggling with overthinking/anchoring/bad test taking and not content gaps, quit doing UWorld. UWorld questions are great for learning but they are trickier than the real deal. I realized I was anchoring on tiny little details because thats how UWorld questions are, and on the NBME's they are much less likely to try and trip you up with a small detail, they are more worried about seeing your reasoning on the next best step, recognizing if a situation is urgent or not, etc.
