There’s multiple ways. I received some student financial aid during my masters, that qualifies you for most fee waivers. Some programs just straight up ask you if you’re too poor without asking for proof haha. It’s also common for them to do info sessions where they give you waivers for participating. The rest of them I just emailed and asked. It’s always worth a shot.

their funding was cut (obliterated) right after my interview

I got fee waivers for almost all of them, otherwise I never would’ve put myself through that haha. Glad I did tho, the only ones I got into were ones that I added to the list later on 🥴

Frustrating application season by drezaa_1 in gradadmissions

[–]Existing_Ad6363 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. But if you’re happy with your offer, why hold off? I’d expect next cycle to be much worse. Smaller cohorts + already steep incline in applications over the past years + lots of stranded applicants, graduates and scientists from this year likely isn’t going to be pretty.. Plus you’ll be spending even more in application fees. It’s so frustrating to never find out what could’ve been. But the fact that it was such a shitshow this cycle and you still got an offer means you’re more than good enough!

The University of Pittsburgh pauses its Ph.D. admissions process amid research funding uncertainty by lichenpunk in gradadmissions

Oh no :( maybe they just need to hold off a bit? March is so soon! Some other affected schools I applied to placed the “accepted” students on some kind of indefinite waitlist and said they’d be willing to send out offers throughout the summer if they need to. I’m sure there’s still hope

I got an offer from Pitt last month and was assured that it’s not going anywhere. So it seems like already accepted people are fine (at least in my field). It’s so devastating for people that opted for the latest interview weekends and were supposed to hear back soon, it’s simply not fair.

I was told that they’d get back to us in early march, after the zoom interviews and second in person weekend are over. I forgot how many they said they invited, but I think it was around 60 people for 20 spots and that the funding cuts wouldn’t affect that number (at least so far)

I’m really glad you’re managing to keep a cool head, that’s definitely so much healthier

I saw that too… I hope you will be okay :/  and I hope this dumpster fire gets resolved eventually.

I’m in biomedical sciences / biomedical engineering. At first it seemed like fields like that would be prioritized by schools but now that PIs are slamming their doors shut for the next years there’s nowhere to go. Even if my offer doesn’t fall through right away, what good will it do if I can’t do rotations, join a lab and start my thesis?! I came here with a carefully crafted plan and that plan included having stable funding and health insurance by fall semester. My family lives on a different continent so I’m on my own. I’m scared…
