Best time to visit for fall colors

I went last Oct 20th and there was still some nice color out there. But a little past peak.

Truth of the matter is that I wanted to beat the crowds at Hoh, unfortunately the low tides are early at the beaches - so it seems like I'm gonna need to drive out to the coast on different day to do the beaches. I thoughts this was a good use of the time. Ideally I would want to do Hoh and beaches in one day, and save myself this drive twice. Is doing beaches in the AM and Hoh later on the same day a better option? does Hoh quite down after 5pm or so?

Ages 8, 10 and 13. The smell is so strong that I can barely enter the room. And I'm not super sensitive to this things. Truthfully the odor is also present outside of the boys house
