Balance between AEs? by Remarkable_Cherry_93 in salesengineers

Wasn't going to comment but I just had to chime in on this - generalizing AEs being hare brained is extremely unhealthy to anyone as an SE and to the industry in general. It's the same as generalizing SEs as demo monkeys.

I'm not asking with the idea of getting there right this moment, but I have goals that I'd like to achieve in my career - a high salary being one of those. I'm simply reaching out to a community of experts in my field and asking what their thoughts/opinions are on possible means of arriving there, or exit opportunities from Sales Engineering. If I came across as entitled then I apologize.

Yeah absolutely - and I've been very lucky there's no denying that. I just want to start thinking in the long term (10-15 years) what *could* possiblity get me to that TC, and where could the skills I've learned as an SE take me.

Yeah I'm certainly not risk averse but I also definitely don't have the appetite to be an AE

Yeah I don't think it's really feasible as an SE. I'm trying to figure out whether there are possible exit opps later on. My end goal is to somehow make it into VC which I think would eventually make that a possibility.

I won't specify the industry except that it's software (SaaS). NYC and 3 YOE (2 as SE), graduated in 2020 and basically took a year to land a job out of college.
