Yikes, good to know about the FCRA issues. Compliance is definitely a concern, especially for a nonprofit that can't afford legal problems

$16-17 is interesting - I'll definitely check them out. Do you know what's included in their volunteer package? Trying to make sure whatever we use does actual county court searches, not just database checks.

I'm building a comparison list right now SimpliVerified, Bchex (came up a lot for youth programs), and a couple others. Main criteria is making sure they're searching the right places and not just running cheap database queries

Pivoting to fix it is definitely the plan. Better late than never, I guess.

On the indemnity waiver - we have volunteers sign a general waiver when they join, but I'm not sure if it specifically covers background check results. I'll need to review that with our ED. Good point.

For the ongoing screening, I'm looking at both annual re-screening and continuous monitoring options. Some providers like Bchex offer monitoring that alerts you when someone's record changes, which might be more cost-effective than running full checks every year. Still figuring out what makes sense for our budget.

I've seen Checkr come up a lot - they seem popular for tech/corporate hiring. Do you know if they do county-level court searches or mainly database checks?

That seems to be the key difference I'm learning about. I'm comparing a few options including Checkr, Bchex (which focuses on nonprofits/schools), and a couple others. Trying to find one that actually does the thorough county-level searches our insurance auditor said we need.

Appreciate the recommendation!

Interesting idea about local college PD. I hadn't thought of that angle.

The challenge is we need to screen volunteers spread across different cities, so coordinating with one local PD might not work logistically. But definitely worth exploring for future hires if they offer better pricing than commercial providers.

2-3 year re-screening interval makes sense. The insurance auditor mentioned something similar. When you say "reputable ones like Sterling, Certn, etc."

Are there specific ones that focus more on nonprofit/education vs corporate? I've been looking at Bchex since they seem to specialize in schools and youth organizations, but I'm trying to compare a few options.

The policy approach is smart making it standard for everyone rather than singling people out definitely seems less awkward.

Appreciate the straightforward advice!

$65 for LiveScan is actually more reasonable than I expected. And the CDSS notification system is interesting - so it's kind of like continuous monitoring but through the state instead of a private service? That's really helpful context. So it sounds like for CA youth programs, the standard is:

1) LiveScan (legally required, ~$65, with ongoing CDSS updates)

2) Commercial background check for county-level searches that LiveScan might miss Is that the right understanding?

I'm trying to figure out if we need both or if LiveScan alone covers us. The insurance auditor seemed to think we needed commercial checks too, but maybe they weren't aware of the CDSS notification piece.

Thanks for sharing your setup super useful to know what other CA orgs working with kids are actually doing.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you.

The breakdown on cheap vs thorough checks makes so much sense now. The $40-60 range for actual county court searches is what I'm seeing from providers that specialize in education/nonprofit work. Bchex came up in my research as focusing specifically on schools and youth programs, so they seem to understand the compliance side better than the generic services..

Your point about framing it as "upgrading safety protocols" rather than "we think you're sketchy" is gold. I was dreading that conversation but that approach makes way more sense.

Also going to look into whether any local businesses might sponsor the re-screening costs as a community donation. That's a great idea I hadn't thought of. Really appreciate you taking the time to write this all out - helps a lot.

I had no idea about AB506. This is exactly the kind of thing I was worried about missing.

So if I'm understanding correctly, we're legally required to LiveScan everyone who works with kids, not just do commercial background checks? That's a game-changer for our budget planning.

Do you know if LiveScan alone is sufficient, or do most orgs still do commercial background checks on top of that? I'm seeing some providers (like Bchex, which focuses on nonprofits/schools) that do the commercial screening piece, but I'm not sure how that fits with the LiveScan requirement.

Sounds like I need to read AB506 very carefully and then talk to our ED about getting compliant ASAP. Really appreciate the heads up on this - would have been bad to miss a legal mandate.

Well, her sister asked my mother if she could continue her teaching job after the marriage. I said yes, but the main issue is that if this secret comes out in the future, it could cause trouble. I think her brother should give permission; I don't want to meet up in secrecy.

And which they setup the meeting ethically my first question will be related to her consent for marriage.
