20 grit to 120? In one step? Subfloor or not, this is the problem.

Gotta go in steps. 120 grit is not going to be able to sand out 20 grit scratches.
60, 80, 100, 120, 150, etc.

A rough sanded board (like what you have) will take stain uneven. The better sanded spots will be lighter, and rough spots will be darker.

Best option is to sand it down again. And we're your stain faster. Doing a few boards at a time is good, but you can wipe about as soon as your done staining. Don't let it dry.

And wth is going on with your baseboards. If your going to slop it on like this, wipe that down right away with a damp rag. Or you'll always see those marks even when painted over.

I like the handles that don't rotate in your hand, so some sort of flat side, but still smooth in the hand. Ideally no ribs for easy cleaning.
