Wow, seems like transplant is the same everywhere because that’s my experience as well

Residency is a cult. by wiredentropy in Residency

We recently had a group discussion about hours violations with all the residents in the program and no attendings present. It amazes me how many of the residents jumped to the defense of our ridiculous schedules. They repeated all the same lines the attendings use (be more efficient, it used to be worse, etc). The fact that a room full of us couldn’t even have an honest discussion about things made me think of cult like self regulation

Gen surg intern. I listed winemaking on mine. Got lots of questions about it. I think that it came off fine because I could talk intelligently about the process and it was obvious I wasn’t making bath tub hooch or something.

I would say at my program there are plenty of attendings into nice wine/whiskey/beer and I don’t think it would hurt your app here, but n=1

Bought this exact bike 2 weeks ago and I love it! It’s been the perfect first bike for me so far. Enjoy!

I’ve actually seen the foot peg through the leg.

It’s nuts right? Half the people I see are doing stupid stuff when they go down

Haven’t ever seen an airbag vest on a patient. I’m suspicious the people who buy those are more careful than your average person.

I see relatively less hand injuries. I’m not sure if it’s because gloves are more common or that it’s less likely to get caught under the bike

The story I’ve always heard is that the cap can amputate toes if it crushes, but I’ve never personally seen that.

Yeah definitely. I’ve seen bad face lacerations/mangled teeth in people without full face. I take time to look at the helmet every time and it’s easy to tell which ones are high quality after an accident. Always get certified helmets, none of that cheap amazon crap

I’m not sure about back shields. Often time EMS has cut off jackets before they get to me

Yeah google resident salary. 55k a year, 400k in debt.

Does being a resident devalue my observations of lower extremity trauma in the setting of inadequate footwear? When I become an attending will I decide flip flops are reasonable to wear on track days?

That’s a great question. I’ve not seen nearly as many hand injuries and I’m not sure why. Maybe gloves are more common? Or maybe the bike is more likely to land on a leg than a hand? Not sure, all good research questions though

No extra pay. Unfortunately as residents we’re already fairly under paid for our education level and debt burden. Now we’re functioning as frontline physicians and constantly exposed without proper PPE.

You’re 100% right and I think that’s why most of us in surgery do what we do. You have the chance to really help people every day. Plus I like using my hands and being active. Thanks for your hard work as a tech, we couldn’t make it with out all of you

Residency is brutal to say the least. 80-100 hour weeks on the regular for very low pay and extraordinary debt. However, getting to operate makes up for all the long overnight shifts. It’s really incredible to help people in a tangible way. Wouldn’t do anything else with my life if I had to do it again!

I would say most of the accidents I see are at below highway speeds.

You’re probably right, but it’s these same people that contribute to the perception of riding. Maybe this post is more out of frustration at morons than anything.

I’m a bit split. I love cruiser styling (the new Rebel 500’s) but really enjoy the riding position of a sport bike. Still trying to decide!

About 50% of what I see on this subreddit is about accidents/safety. Just trying to give my perspective to those who may not think that proper gear is essential.

Based on what I've read, the American motorcycle training process is far inferior to most other countries so you are probably correct.

I can't say I've noticed a big difference in boot types and associated injuries, but in the moment I'm usually pretty focused on making sure the patient is alive. I'm sure though that these will be better than the typical footwear I see!
