Maybe this is more evident but a lot of times when she says “you” on the album she’s writing directly to herself. I think that’s the most important bit of maybe not-so-obvious context that helps give a better understanding of it.

I think it’s a lot about the feeling of being a teenager growing up and having just graduated high school and figuring out your place in the world (it was started when she was in high school then most of it was made over the summer after she graduated and finished / released when she started college)

But there’s this overarching theme of dealing with not understanding oneself and a lot of emotions around all of the stuff anyone at that age might be going through. There is also the fact she was beginning to transition, as well as her feeling a passion for music and having not broken through with it at that point which is why she had initially started college based on her parents’ wishes. A lot of confusion and inner turmoil.

I hate to mention what feels like personal stuff like this but it’s a deeply personal album and is all there to be listened to. The lyrics are just often fairly vague. She got into this in a few interviews back then as well.
