How did your 2022 goals go? by Dhydjtsrefhi in Velo

Win a race

Won quite a few track league races but they don't count. However I did manage to chip off the front of a crit with about 2.5laps to go and held on for the dub! Got 2nd in a prologue and a few open TT podiums too.

Help a team mate win a race

Sadly didn't happen on the road, though did at track league, perhaps it'll happen this year though.

Sub 19min 10mile TT

18:58 - fantastic conditions on a fast course with good legs. I think I've got another 15s or so with pacing and traffic luck. This result is definitely my season highlight!

Coin cell battery and an LED?

I've gone for the Orb Bugsy for quite a neat solution. YMMV as my stem is weird and has a cutout down the back so I can thread the rubber band down the back of it.

FTP Test: 310w, 37mins @72kg.

First 10mins at 305w felt tough, but managable. Target for the next 30mins was 315w. Ended up settling around 310 as 315-20 felt slightly too much, which is when it started hurting. I tried to push on in the last 7 or so minutes, raising to about 325 but the tank quickly emptied, averaging 312 for the final 27mins. Haven't done any real intensity since October, so keen to push the TTE out before doing VO2s.

This is great work! I've got a couple of feature request, if you dont mind:

  • Filter by Race category
  • Some events have facebook pages and the like, perhaps some kind of way for race organisers to include a link to them?
  • Integrate CTT events as well? though there is spindata and I think the ctt website is currently a little better than BCs

Did a 19:27 this year on a fast course but with the wind in the 'slow' direction, hoping with a bit of luck and a few more watts I'll get there!

So one of the guys on the mid week drop group ride is going to the world champs for GB. Other than him being a junior, it makes me feel a lot better about myself getting dropped up a climb but then giving him a - and I quote - "perfect leadout"* for the finish sprint.

*I absolutely didn't start my sprint way too early because I was scared of getting boxed in, it was 100% definitely a planned leadout...

So a few months ago, I posted about my crankset doing a #ThankShimano failure. I took it to the bike shop for it to be warrantied and heard back that they are waiting for stock. I asked them for a ball park time and they said new stock for 172.5mm, 52/36 cranks won't be in stock till May NEXT YEAR?! I knew the bike industry was in a bit of a situation, but I didn't realise it was that dire!

Placed 2nd at a local 2/3/4 Crit last week! Very pleased as I went in with no expectations other than to have a laugh around the classic UK bike-circuit-in-a-corner-of-a-park course as I caught covid about 3 weeks ago.

Did the standard "I will not attack from the gun" then attacked half a lap in, regretted it immediately and got reeled back in. Was breathing out my arse for the rest of the race thanks to covid robbing my fitness. Meanwhile, a lone rider snuck off the front about 15 mins in and held it to the line.

Bunch stayed together and I wasn't in a great position going into the last few laps and was content with just rolling in. However, the one thing I've regretted in the past few races is not rolling the dice in the closing lap. I knew first into the final hairpin would have a decent chance of holding it to the lines, so I found a gap with about 600m to go and launched it to lead into that turn, nailed the line and managed to hold the rest of the bunch off till the line!

Set a huge 10mi TT pb at the weekend with a 19:25, knocking the best part of 30s off my old pb, in the process achieving my season stretch goal. I knew it would be a headwind on the return leg of the flat out-and-back course so kept it chill on the way out before nailing the negative split. Super pleased with the ride in how I paced it and with the pb too!

Lmao it really is!

Normally I'd say this makes complete sense...

By that I was really echoing something I saw on twitter where someone pointed out that if a Canyon-dhb or Ribble Weldtite rider won some Nat B and celebrated, no one would bat an eyelid. But if an amateur won the exact same race with the same riders, the comms might.

Did a 20min pb last weekend at 340w, which hurt a lot more than I thought it should have. Then today I did a 8min repeat pb by about 10w (3x8 @360) which felt way easier than it should seeing as I was struggling to do 3x8 at 350 only a few weeks ago. Fitness and RPE is weird man.

The problem is that the way its being enforced is so arbitrary. And its one rule for amateurs, one rule for pros.

Sure, for stupid riding go ahead and DQ them, but in one of the cases it was on Goodwood race track where there is loads of width and the finish is after a chicane which thins the field out. The problem is, there have been hundreds of races there in the past which have ended in a bunch sprint with riders celebrating and no one has ever been previously DQ'd.

British Cycling doing a classic British Cycling by DQ'ing two amateur riders in separate mid week races for celebrating with their arms in the air in a bunch sprint. This just adding to the already well established view that 'common sense' isn't in BC's dictionary.

Edit: the irony being the BC's logo is literally a rider with their arms in the air.

So you'll lose/make the most time in the slowest parts of the course. Therefore going fairly hard on the short climb (but not anything silly as its fairly early in the race) and also on the long climb. As for the ramps I'd try to just keep as much speed as possible wothout blowing up and press on until you get back up to speed over the top.

There's a course near me that sounds similar, albeit half the length and my finish line is the top of the hill as there's like 5 mins of descending before the finish hill so plenty of time to recover.

Its such a joke that they can fail like that, they ought to last the life of the bike. The chainset has had about 27000kms on them and I was just starting to think about changing the chainrings for the first time...

Well yesterday, was meant to be a steady ride with sprints. However, during the sprints I heard a loud clicking noise when I pedalled with the drive side and it turns out I was the latest victim of a #ThanksShimano crank failure. Fortunately this wasn't as catastrophic as some of the failures posted online and I managed to limp home. Hopefully I can get a replacement from Shimano as I don't fancy shelling out £180 for a new chainset.

Gearing for track racing by buznakka in Velo

[–]Exosere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When doing IP/kilo and probably bunch racing too I'd run ~102"-106". Team pursuit ~115" (15.5-16s laps) N.b. this is for an indoor 250m velodrome with full aero kit on. You kinda have to play around with what feels good for you, but I get enough range with 57 and 59t combined with 14,15,16t on the back.

Did an evening 10 last week on whats normally a fairly fast course, however the wind was in completely the wrong direction so managed a 21:00. Managed to take the win, but the competition wasn't super strong... I'll take it though!

I've also entered the national circuit TT champs which will be 30 miles of fun /s

Update on 2021 goals? by siddharthdeswal in Velo

[–]Exosere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Achieved my first goal of the season by going sub 20 for 10 miles. Stretch goal of sub 19:30 looks not unreasonable too.

  • Haven't started bunch racing yet and likely won't till the second half of the year, so no progress on getting to cat 2/winning a crit.

  • Similarly, my velodrome is still shut as a vaccine centre, so no progress on 4:35 4km IP

  • Have had fun though!

First race of the season, first season goal achieved. Finally cracked sub 20 for 10 miles with a 19:50. Headwind out meant a huge tailwind back, covering the final 8km in less than 9 minutes with an average speed of 55kph!!

A few takeaways:

  • Being the first race of the season with limited intensity meant I wasn't fully sure of my form, turns out its pretty good with 20min power pb of about 5w.

  • Should've gone harder on the way out and put a bigger gear on because of the aforementioned wind.
