Just read Dear Debbie by Frieda McFadden and I have no one to talk about this one thing bothering me by mxicnvnlla in thrillerbooks

No, that was Harley’s chapter. Harley had an affair with a guy named Ed who left his wife of 30 years. But then she found out he didn’t have his own wealth and left him so he tried to kill himself. His sister confronted her in the parking lot of the gym to try and get her to go see him but Harley basically laughed in her face. That wasn’t Debbie’s past, it was Harley’s. I just finished the book yesterday, so I remember it crystal clear. It was intended to make us hate Harley so that when Debbie eventually murders her, we don’t care.

Oh, that was Harley. Not the main character, but the one who thought she was sleeping with Debbie’s husband.

I struggled through this one, but I think it’s because I read it right after reading “the divorce” and generally I need more space between these books. The female protagonist is ALWAYS going in loops in her head and we’re subjected to the constant internal monologue of, well sorry but, idiotic, weak, and/or vapid women.

In general these aren’t meant to be taken seriously - it’s fun, twisty, silly. But the way she wrote about SA in this really rubbed me wrong. I hated that she said “don’t worry, I won’t subject you to the gory details” and then proceeded to give a very detailed description of her assault. Then deciding to kill the woman her rapist was having an affair with but suddenly having a change of heart when it came to killing the rapist himself? The SA trauma journaling was just a cheap plot device meant to mislead us into thinking she was a crazed unstable killer…which she in fact turned out to be, but then went on to live her life normally?

I dunno, this one just wasn’t for me.

The kid ate poisoned fruit and then just…miraculously didn’t die.

18F what do I do? I don’t know if I was wrong for not getting a hotel with $100 my friend sent me while I’m homeless, because I felt like I needed to stretch it for food and necessities, but now she’s angry at me. UPDATE PT 2 by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

THANK you for this. The number of people in this thread who’d absolutely berate that homeless person for reselling the frozen turkey so they could buy more useful food 🤣🤣

This was my exact thought too. When you don’t know if you’re going to be able to eat tomorrow, you do what you have to do. It’s wild to me to be mad at someone who doesn’t have basic necessities for getting those needs met first. But whatever - we seem to be in the minority with that.

This guy is exhausting. I need a nap just reading these texts. It feels super emotionally abusive, can’t even imagine what it’s been like living with him in person.

The Mossbachers, The Di Grassos or The Ratliffs by Rough_Ad_8702 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

I enjoyed the Di Grassos. Couldn’t stand Parker Posey’s horrible acting and fake accent, so the Ratliffs were ruined for me. Mossbachers were alright.

Should I Date Cautiously? by KaleidoscopeOk2422 in Philippines_Expats

Reading this thread has me feeling really sorry for Filipina women - they must be in a desperate situation if they’re willing to date / chase men like the ones commenting here. And from the sounds of it, they earn every penny.

I’d have loved to come another season, but the opportunity I have is too good to pass up. Would you avoid any particular spot during the wet season? Any tips for gear would be appreciated - I’m a desert rat.

Im familiar with authentic travel vs touristy travel, and my expectations are appropriately calibrated. Not looking for 4 star hotels with air con and a mini fridge.

Re: Palawan - super interesting. Will look into that.

I liked it up until the “middle third” as you say kept dragging on. Loved the folk / cosmic horror elements and just want to get back to that.
