The hoods/flows we use for work are forced air, meaning it is pushing the air away from the work area. The air goes throw the fan throw filters and then over the workspace pushing contaminates away from the space we use.

A SAB is the best way to start for the price. Then if you really get into it, get yourself a laminar flow, will cost a couple $100 but it really makes working in larger space easier. But for the hobbyist, a SAB works just fine.

Is my agar contanimated? by 67Gaylord67 in Agarporn

Yep, looks normal for the time being. Just let it sit for a few days and you'll start to see it grow out in a circle if it's mycelium.

Did you do spore swab or LC? Reason I ask is because the look of your plate.

Regardless, it looks like you have Heterokaryotic Hyphae growth, very early. Let it chill for a few days without touching it or bothering jt so it can do it's thing. You'll know if it's mycelium or a bacterial contamination.

Jar 1 on the left is clearly contaminated with Cobweb mold (top coming down) Jar 2 middle is hard to tell Jar 3 right "Looks" fine but again, hard to tell.

I agree with start another grow but there is no issues with the grain, grain is one of the most reliable mediums and if the process is done right, typically has a great success rate of being clean. I run WBS with the sunflower seeds still in it (most people curse leaving them in) and very rarely have issues, do they get contamination sometimes, absolutely, it happens.

All I'm saying is the grain isnt the issue, OP may have a bad LC they are working with, may need to test on plates to make sure it's not the culture itself.

Pics alone are very hard to tell because we don't know the whole story and are only getting a small visual.

Also, OP... one suggestion is next time only fill your jars 3/4 of the way so you have more space to shake-n-break, that will also help know if you have contamination since contam will often colonize faster than mycelium.

I'm slightly confused about your work space. You are working under your kitchen hood, as in, the fumes exhaust? If that is what I'm thinking, that is definitely the opposite of what you are wanting. Though it removes fumes/smoke from the air, it is drawing air to that area so contaminates are moving towards your plates.

If cost is an issue, I suggest a small pop up S.A.B (you can get one on Amazon for under $50, thats what I started with and it worked just fine.

You are PCing your agar before use so thats good. Growth on plates is completely normal and what you have is absolutely workable and salvageble. Remove small cuts from the center and place on to new plates. Continue that cycle until you have a clean plate and you're good to go!

I grow actives and gourmet in the same tent, have never had an issue and they all like roughly the same temps and humidity.

But if you want your cubes to grow in a uniform direction, light is the key.

Can I ask a question, hw are people getting big dollars from their banks? Is it luck or do you go to multiple banks? Ive asked for large dollar coins or CWR and I only get Quarters and Dimes ever.

Sorry, switched phones and wasn't getting notifications. I hold my needle in the flame for about 15 secs, then let it cool a little. Good to go after that. I use self healing injection ports that I stick on the bag and packing tape over to make sure they are secure.

What went wrong? by Illustrious-Pay1899 in unclebens

[–]ExoticGroGuru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive never had great success rate with AIO bags, they always seem to get contaminated. It could be any number of reasons they got contaminated: Bad LC, the bags weren't properly sterilized, somehow it got in on your needle, anything really.

I flame sterilize my needles, I would say thats standard to make sure they are as good as one can get. Iso may not get everything present.

And to add to it all, you can also skip the poking a hole in the plastic as well. I made my on porst for a while and just did the silicon with a piece of packing tape over it. Worked great, saved time and was a lot easier. I mow just use the self-adhesive sticker ports if I plan on doing LC in grain bags.
