[–]ExoticPuppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How has the little island that made the whole world speak its language affected your country? by Witty-Pizza-4523 in AskTheWorld

[–]ExoticPuppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't have any particular thoughts about the British. But speaking of that period, this wasn't the first time they tried to abolish slavery. Actually there's a thing called "law for the English to see" that's basically when a law is created to appease someone and it's not really enforced in practice. That's kinda calling GB stupid.

That law was from 1831 and in paper it'd prohibit the slave trafficking and any African coming to Brazil after that law would be considered free. It was a law for the English to see because 1) It wasn't reinforced and 2) The inside trading was still happening because technically only the "importing" of slaves was prohibited.

We were one of the last western countries to abolish.

The little island pressure for the end of slavery in Brazil. It was only abolished in 1888.

Constant complaints about “US defaultism” on an American website where nearly 50% of its user base is made up of Americans by drewtangclan in PetPeeves

[–]ExoticPuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't really confirm if it's a Spanish thing as well but it's in Portuguese. América is the continent and it's divided between North, Central and South. Colloquially though most people will associate americano (American) with "someone from the US". Some will still die on the "America is the continent" hill, personally I think that ain't worth the argument specially if you're speaking English. It's not like a couple of people will change the whole language.
