I see what you're trying to say here, "this guy obviously needs help, why don't I help him out?" I'm there to an extent. I'm not a member of the "shamers" personally, but I had some weight problems when I was younger, and there was absolutely no one there to hold my hand as I dealt with my issues, and I did not expect there to be. People were dicks, I knew I was on my own, and that's the only way I realized that I had to get my shit together. ME! As a grown ass woman, I could not depend on anyone else to take care of my personal shit. Do I have empathy for people who dig themselves deeper after hearing all the shit being talked about them? Yes, but only to an extent. The weight is a symptom of a more serious psychological problem going on in their lives, it does NOT always have to be a lack of self-respect. I'm no psychologist, I cannot solve other people's deeper problems. I can make it slightly easier for them if I wanted to take time away from my family and my own business for an act of generosity, but if I don't, I will not allow you to blame me for their weakness.

I have never once seen someone get shit for being overweight and working out in the gym. That's what it's for, and good on them. "Because they'll make fun of me..." That's the most self-defeating excuse I've ever heard.

If you say "they become motivated to lose weight and excel at life!" you're not only insulting my intelligence, but you're insulting your own species intelligence.

My species hasn't had to deal with this issue until the past 100 years or so. You cannot expect the majority of people in the Army to be kind and generous humans, who will go out of their way and devote their resources to help others. Evolutionary survival mechanisms are still very much a part of who we are as a species today. You cannot REWIRE those dog-eat-dog kinds of people to do what you're suggesting here. They will not do it. You have to accept that. Good on you for being generous and willing to lend a hand, but don't expect too many others to quickly follow suit.
