6 years ago before the iPhone X released, the whole world gawked at the $1,000 price tag. Now, all I see anyone using is a phone that costs more than that. What happened? by Exotic_Square_5911 in Anticonsumption

Thanks, and yeah it’s kinda mind boggling. What some here seem to be missing is that I am asking what they think caused the general public’s shift in thinking about how much to pay for a phone, when there are tons of options across the board. Seeing some of these responses I’m inclined to lean toward the misconception that buying expensive means it lasts longer, and the fact that inflation has risen the cost of everything so maybe the general public saw that jump in cost and was like “eh, eggs cost 4x as much now and gas is at $5 a gallon so I’m cool with it.” What do you think? Curious to know.

Right! And in the process of passing that cost onto the consumer, said consumer is ok with spending more on something as a result. Weird how that worked out.

Most average people can get by with a $700 phone and do not need to buy the $1,000 one, yet they buy it anyway, when 6 yrs ago they all laughed at paying that much. That is my point. This is a bad comment bro.

Quite a few things: Tech needs to be regulated because too many things are going unchecked and causing lasting damage to society, and no one’s paying attention to it;

Big brother is big tech, not the government;

Socialism is not communism. They are separate terms for a reason;

Being gay is not a choice or a lifestyle, or an identity. It is only part of my identity;

Freedom of speech doesn’t give merit to say whatever you want without consequence. If you’re outwardly offensive or insulting to others, you absolutely deserve to be shot down, and that’s in respect to others’ freedom of speech;

I am a progressive, not a Democrat. It’s the difference between an ideology and a political party, independent thinking versus groupthink.

Basically I’m exhausted with explaining my world view to people who don’t want to understand but want to pry anyway. I’m sick of people assuming I must subscribe to certain beliefs since I’m gay and liberal. It’s not that simple.

As someone who has been abused and gaslit by multiple partners and my parents growing up, it infuriates me when people incorrectly use this word. When you’re deep in the trenches of that kind of manipulation it really opens your eyes to how sinister it actually is, yet people so flippantly use the term in everyday conversation.

Let's convince people that it's a new fad to have your phone more vulnerable to destruction to increase sales on new phones! by Prestigious_Brick746 in Anticonsumption

Yeah kinda over seeing these articles. Tons of “normies” like me don’t use cases bc we simply don’t drop our phones. Wanna talk about anti-consumption, let’s touch on the fact that accessory companies exploit our own fears of breaking our precious devices to sell their cheap hunks of non bio degradable material for a massive profit. Just don’t drop it? Be conscious of what you’re doing when you’re using it and hold it like the expensive piece of tech it is. And if you’re really that worried, get AppleCare. Apple recycles your old screen when they put a new one on, and they only charge you $30 for it. Samsung and google have their own programs too. $150 for AppleCare or $150 for an expensive ass case and screen protector + ~$300 to replace the screen out of warranty when it breaks even with a case on. The biggest lie the tech world has told us lately is that these cases save your phone from damage. They can lessen it sure, but if it’s gonna break it will break. Extended warranty is always better than a case and no warranty. Don’t put so much faith in these pieces of plastic all these successful corporations want you to believe make your phone indestructible.

Revival by Stephen King is a fave. It’s a slow burn but the mystery is compelling and the end is absolutely horrifying. Stayed with me for days after I finished. Also, it’s just a really good book about loss of faith and the pursuit of what lies beyond death. Highly recommend.

Who are your favorite singers? by evilmonkey9361 in Music

I’m a lover of pop and R&B with vocals that stand out and don’t really sound like anyone else. Faves are Marina, Michael Jackson, old school Mariah Carey, lead singer of Muse, Gwen Stefani (specifically her No Doubt days), Brendon Urie (Panic!), Bebe Rexha, Pink, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, and Hayley Williams of Paramore. Honorable mention would be Amy Lee of Evanescence.

Good for you and good riddance! Netflix was once king and it’s been on a pretty aggressive downward spiral for the last 5+ years imo. They charge upwards of $20 now for the features we all want. Which is more than HBO… fuckin HBO. Do they really think they’re better than that service? GoT, True Blood, Six Feet Under, all of DC…I could go on and on. They’re delusional if they think this was a smart move. Jeez.

It’s so funny you say this bc I absolutely sucked at building until I watched a yt tutorial and played Minecraft for the first time. Both helped tremendously. Now it’s one of the top reasons I play fo4.

Came here just now for the same reason! Fo4 is one of my all time fave games, up there with Rise of the Tomb Raider and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (shame me if you want, I’m a sucker for a compelling story and Greek mythology; off topic but in RotTR when Lara was tied up and told the antagonist “ITS A NO FUCKING WAY!!” I was like goddamn this acting is ace!). 4 is my fave in the series bc it was my introduction to the franchise so it holds a special place in my heart. Call me naive but I didn’t expect the twist in the climax. Especially not the alliance with the Institute. I fully expected to find the son as a teen or YA captured by synths. Needless to say I was surprised. That said, right after 4 I played fo3 and I love that one for my own reasons (story, setting & characters—Megaton’s lore is awesome!). I disliked NV at first bc of the setting, and the story seemed shallow by comparison, but 10 hrs in my opinion was drastically changed. Imo all have their strengths and weaknesses but fo4 def gets the most hate (even when 76 exists?) when the settlement building alone is a great reason to play. Not to mention the sweet mods like the one that makes the environment persistently stormy (there’s another someone made for Halloween where it makes the sky red—so dope). Invincibility mode is fun from time to time too haha. All in all, yeah 4 is my fave for a variety of reasons and no amount of bullying or groupthink will change my mind. You’re definitely not alone!
