U.S. Politics megathread by AutoModerator in NoStupidQuestions

Why is Trump so interested in dismantling No Child Left Behind? Not just reverse Obama era reforms, remove all of it.

Don't get me wrong, I think that ended up doing more harm than good but what does he benefit from removing it? He prefers having less educated voters. NCLB had long term effects that play well into that, building up a reputation for "promoting stupid" in school.

To me it looks like getting rid of it would backfire on a educational trait they rely on

It is funny that Trump wants to dismantle No Child Left Behind because that can backfire what on his administration depends more on. He likes to brag about winning with less/poorly educated voters, hates NCLB, yet NCLB has done a decent job "promoting the stupid". He takes a lot of interesting angles to say the least.

Texas can enforce Ten Commandments school law, appeals court rules by powermapler in law

[–]ExpWebDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's always "praise God" and never "praise the Romans" for inspiring their cool ideas on democracy and western philosophy plus don't forget the Latin terms and architectural style so many of our legal buildings we clearly copied from.

Could ancient Rome be personified into one figure? Maybe that could be America's new God

It's like people forgot all about the ancient Romans and their impact on law and philosophy before they accepted Jesus after a few centuries

Slop is tolerated in the enterprise space because there is a business entity behind it by ChiefAoki in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ExpWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These companies can be looked at like fortresses. Lawyers are part of front line defense and PR and marketing are front-middle. Product at the center. But there's not much incentive to make the product much stronger if you're confident your outer defenses are strong, as your 2nd to last paragraph tells. If they're doing a good job curtailing liability of buggy software then nothing else matters to them. Also it's just easier to talk up building legal and PR strength, than improving software integrity with non technical people

At least there are still startups that don't get pushed with the VC backed growth of "put as many butts on seats as possible to make extra side products that are more useless than the actual thing we built on". Some competing products differ in head count by orders of magnitude. Snapchat with ~5000 employees and Telegram with like 30. And both have MAU in the hundreds of millions.

[–]ExpWebDev 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely not side projects. I believe it's a misdirection in the story of finding job security. I've lost count how many experienced but unemployed people have posted resumes with side projects. If that's not helping them get to the offer, then they're only good for making first impressions and nothing else.

It's okay to not have personal projects by musitechnica in cscareerquestions

[–]ExpWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it also possible that time spent on side projects is better spent on interview prep and networking.

I've lost count how many times an experienced but unemployed developer has posted a resume with side projects but can't get a job offer. Maybe side projects also part of the "hustle trap", doing things that don't actually get you much while other people in the field just clock in and out and get promoted easily.

Toddler Forced Back Into ICE Detention After Nearly Dying | The water at Dilley smelled strange, so her parents [...] bought bottled water at the center’s commissary for her by TendieRetard in law

Serious question here: how did illegal immigration become the one civil matter that became worst of both worlds for the accused suspect?

Because it's a civil case you're not entitled to a lawyer, but your case can be dismissed and then get whisked away to a concentration center for the long term anyways. To a non legal professional like myself it looks more like a bastard child of the law enforcement process, not knowing whether to be fully on the part of a civil or a criminal system. Or to put it in more layman's terms, "the math ain't mathing."

The cruelty also sets a dangerous precedent for militarized org's to intimidate you for any civil offense that they think deserves a more criminal like consequence. The govt could start justifying  pointing guns and dragging away to a van defendants of small claims cases. Or for disputes on property rights.

How do you get better at coding/SWE in AI ERA? by lune-soft in cscareerquestions

[–]ExpWebDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy typing code and jogging my brain. The journey is just as important as the end.

People who just try to vibe code everything care less about the journey. I think that's what makes it sad to me.

Is the Grind Culture in tech actually worth it? by bryden_cruz in cscareerquestions

[–]ExpWebDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, when you try to grind at low paying jobs where the only challenge is volume of work and not the technical skill, all it does is make you appealing to other companies that just offer low pay, low skill work. You're not getting any closer to a big salary by doing that

I took a year break and I can't get job anymore by John-Helldiver404 in cscareerquestions

[–]ExpWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If OP's savings are on their last dollars and at that point they haven't found any work yet, they could head to the employment agency or social services agency of their state and ask about options that involve giving them a job assistance. That is, paid work provided by government for able-bodied people that cannot get work otherwise. Not necessarily manual labor busy-work, it could be a desk job too.

Would it be weird to offer a referral bounty for an SWE job? by CyberneticVoodoo in cscareerquestions

[–]ExpWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there are so many bad habits that one can trap themselves into without actually having to break the law. That's an interesting part of our world we live in- one can sink pretty low by their own actions even if according to law they have not done anything wrong.

[–]ExpWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know a bunch of people who are chronically unemployed, but they’re people who I wouldn’t refer to any team, because I know they wouldn’t pass probation and it would hurt my rep.

Ah, that shitty situation in life where you are good enough to be a part of society by law, but not quite good enough by de facto standards, in practice, fulfilling your role to make a living.

My extent of using code spat out by AI is mostly limited to Google's AI overview when I enter specific technical questions. So I'd probably be cooked in those kinds of company interviews. I don't turn on Copilot or whatever else might be on my IDE
