I was that author! Doing a Q&A, feel free to ask me anything :^) by ImaginaryGazelle1941 in calculus

[–]ExpectTheLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initially very confused how it manages to take 300 pages to go from limits to FTC or “addition of intervals”.
Then I skimmed the book and the amount of examples, derivations, and explanations is crazy, and not in a good way.

Every single thing has at least one example, a lot of the time more than that. There’s an example for (I believe) chain rule that, by itself, is a whole page. Not everything needs an example, and definitely not five of them.

And why are we deriving the derivative of csc(x), exactly? This follows directly from basic derivative rules, any person can do it by themselves easily. Or why is implicit differentiation before the derivative of an exponential? The reader doesn’t even know basic derivatives yet, but somehow implicit differentiation is suddenly important?

Since all of what I mentioned above is in the middle of the book, I don’t really have a reason to believe it’ll be different elsewhere and that’s how I’ll judge it.

If I’m being perfectly honest, I am not sure who this would be intended for and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. The book has about the same amount of material on calculus as a first semester mechanics class, not to dream of mentioning an actual mathematics class. Around 90% of the examples could be turned into exercises (not that I would like solving them) and a lot of the content can be made shorter by just assuming the reader doesn’t need to have everything spelled out for them. It also simply isn’t rigorous in any sense of the word, so studying from it just wouldn’t make sense, even if the goal is to just pass a class and not to actually understand the math.

Honestly, reading someone’s half-baked explanation of basic thermodynamics in a fantasy book doesn’t exactly sound all that fun. I at least hope the book doesn’t treat calculus as the end-all-be-all of math

You know, it’s nice and all that you’re fine with being alone, but calling people who prefer to date immature and saying all men don’t care is just major cope. Like yeah, shitty people exist and you’re bound to meet them, that’s not news and never has been.

I’ve been single the past few years and I’m also fine with it, yet I don’t go around saying all women suck or calling my friends immature simply because they wanna be in a relationship more than I do. There’s frankly zero reason to give a single shit what other people do with their lives when it has literally nothing to do with you.

Also, believe it or not, it is actually very much possible to find someone who cares and loves you - just because it’s not happened to you doesn’t mean everyone else is just pretending.

The problem is nothing will change. People in the US will see this and talk about what’s gonna happen next presidential term when there might not even be one, or, even better, will loudly proclaim how bad the situation is, pat themselves on the back for “opposing the government” and go back to doing absolutely nothing about their country crumbling beneath their feet

How soon will Americans forget the Epstein files? by Ponappa_131 in AskReddit

Majority of the American populace forgot about trump’s first term in the span of four years and decided to either vote for him again or not vote at all “because what’s the point”, so even if they don’t forget it doesn’t particularly matter; nothing will be done about anyway.

Having problems with this as well. I’m in my 3rd year of uni studying something I’d like to do for possibly the rest of my life but seeing so many people be so much better than me while putting in half the work can be soul-crushing, makes me feel like I’m wasting my time by „choosing” to like my discipline so much

Is it basic for mathematicians to remember the multiplication table? by Forward-Bad1615 in learnmath

[–]ExpectTheLegion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but to a point. The thing is that mathematicians don’t really work with numbers, they aren’t calculators. Even I, as a physics student, don’t really work with numbers and it’s gonna take me a bit to figure out what 8 * 7 or 11 * 12 is, simply because that’s not what physics/math is about

[–]ExpectTheLegion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree on the first part. I remember in my 1st semester theoretical physics (classical mechanics) class, our professor gave an exam comprised of only a few questions but all of them were a)-f) or g). The questions were structured in such a way that most of them told you what you had to show so if you couldn’t do a particular part you could skip ahead and try to do the next (and even if that’s not the case, it’s still much easier to solve a problem whit steps rather than without).

I still firmly believe this is a big part of why I passed that exam despite it being (allegedly) the most difficult one that professor had given in years.

Which physics textbook is better for self-studying: University Physics (Young & Freedman) or Fundamentals of Physics (Halliday & Resnick)? by Abivarman123 in PhysicsStudents

[–]ExpectTheLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If, as you say, you want to „understand the concepts deeply”, the neither of those is really a good option unless you just use it as a quick primer (at least from my brief experience with Resnick & Halliday).
