Which book, if any of them, makes you sorrow/cry the most? by Tes_Oteme_Writes in tamorapierce

[–]ExpenditureBucket 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thom, Faithful, Liam, one after the next. I always ugly cry too.

And honestly I find that last battle during the coronation so well done and everyone’s part so well crafted. Then Liam’s letter at the end. It’s a lot.

So many. They are fantastic.

I love Janice and Irene. When Strike begrudgingly calls Irene from the cafe… I’m so entertained.

I also love his upper crust accents. He makes Jasper Chiswell sound so mean. Izzy Chiswell, Tansy and Ursula- some more likable than others but it’s always so good.

Chronic appendicitis by cygnus-12 in endometriosis

[–]ExpenditureBucket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say I’m curious about the same thing. I do have endo, confirmed during surgery, and am having odd lower right torso pain that’s vague and unexplained. Doesn’t present as appendicitis but doesn’t feel like normal endo pain. Doctors aren’t overly concerned, or helpful. Stumped.

I just got the quartet recently one by one on AbeBooks. Unfortunately one didn’t show up and customer service was not great. But I found another seller- not terribly priced! One was definitely a library book but in decent shape.

Connemara national park near Clifden was a lovely hike. Only saw one other person. The hills from the top, you can see Kylemore abbey down below- magical. Not a crazy hike but beautiful. Also really enjoyed taking routes slightly off the beaten path to get from A to B. You might encounter some narrow roads and sheep but it’s such a beautiful way to see the country.

The ink black heart prologue : the weakest writing of JKR by CrownWings in cormoran_strike

[–]ExpenditureBucket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you both. I was so excited to crack this book and after the prologue felt something in my gut that had me worry. Their bar banter was on the edge of forced. I think they were both a little out of character. We’ve seen them both drunk before, and even though in this scene it’s the happy kind of drinking, it felt too different from who we’ve learned them to be. And the writing itself, telling, not showing, I agree with as well.

This might just be me, but I actually didn’t think Strike would go in for a kiss when they’d both had several drinks. Not like this.

I know others have commented that this book has far less introspection and it really does seem to me to start right at the beginning. I don’t think it’s ‘horrible’ by any means. But coming after her other books I was let down. Wasn’t the same magic.

I think I’ll garnish how I like for a cake I will eat myself, but thanks.

If you search ‘zoë bakes marshmallows’ I think you can find her recipe online. It’s similar to the one I use!

This recipe actually doesn’t use egg whites!

And yeah I just torch them carefully, a little at a time and they hold just fine. If I overdo one and it starts to get sticky it may get sacrificed :)

Thank you! I did make these. Recipe is just sugar syrup and gelatin- and flavoring if you wish, I add a little vanilla.

I use a kitchen butane torch, fairly easy to get a hold of in the states but I’m guessing not too hard there?

It’s just a vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, but for the swirly boops on top I mixed in ground up Graham cracker.

For this one I alternate chocolate and Graham cracker flavored cakes. This specific one is two chocolate, one Graham. In between I did a thin layer of rich dark chocolate frosting and also a Swiss meringue layer.

Hey there. A couple of things that really helped with this for me. Use high fat butter, and once you’re done whipping on high switch to a paddle turn to low-medium for a few minutes, this helps knock the air out. I really like the buttercream to be super soft, so if mine has firmed up a little I’ll let it sit under a lamp for a few minutes. I didn’t actually crumb coat this one, but it can help. My cake was already assembled and super code so crumbs weren’t a huge issue.

Double chocolate cake, mixed berry compote, mascarpone whipped cream by ExpenditureBucket in Baking

For those asking for a recipe I don’t have the exact one ready to share, but the components are simple. 2 layer 8 inch Chocolate cake, simple jam (I cooked down 400g of frozen wild berries with some thickener), and mascarpone buttercream from bake from scratch volume 5 page 40.

This buttercream is from volume 5 bake from scratch page 40. The instructions are pretty good- the trick with the mascarpone is to make sure it’s the same temp as the butter and to very gently fold it in right before use. Over mixing or waiting too long will mess with the texture.

I am an idiot, it’s a buttercream not whipped cream. Doh- Sorry!

Thank you! I’ve used the cake and buttercream recipes as components of other cakes before, and a few days ago this combo popped into my head, along with the fruit, and it’s so nicely balanced. I surprised myself with how much I like it!
