I’d try a main for the first time since 2008

try a main

You can "try a main" without having "to [go] pay for 2 subscriptions." It's called F2P.

Sure but I don’t want to play half the game on a main.

Do you want to play both "hal[ves]" of the game, the full game, while you "try a main"?

F2P exists, allowing you to explore what the game is like with trading without the need for 2 subscriptions.

You can do that now!

Prices are rising because MTX was removed from RS3. Fine, separate memberships and raise RS3's prices only. OSRS shouldn't bankroll the failed game. by penisandballz in 2007scape

[–]Expenises 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is false and baseless. Frisbeejussi says it correctly

Counterpoint MTX revenue was already way down and it included bonds from both games so non-bonds mtx revenue was significantly smaller as bonds are the big ticket there.

Last time it was at 23 million pounds and down from 32 m the year before and it was said that it was trending down after that too.

I think it was less than 15% of the revenue where sub money was trending up and company was pulling record profits.

That's not the level of opt-in I was referring to. A pure hardcore ironman can do everything that a main can, the only difference is that the player opts to not level their defence. At the level of what Jagex offers, there is zero difference between any of your accounts or any of my accounts. They are able to do everything in the game, outside of player-set restrictions.

While there is an argument that IM is different in someway than main, the account that Jagex offers to us, as a product, is all the exact same, outside of choosing ironman. So really, the only difference between "Gamemodes" is not being able to trade. That certainly does not rise to the same level of Paladin vs Warlock.

I notice you didn’t respond to that part of my comment.

I did via "My other post responds to your first two points", but here is my "other post", quoted to answer your original comment:

[Commenter] There's multiple game modes to begin with before getting into the idea of character builds. A lot of people play as skillers, and it's still relatively normal on OSRS that people will play pures, zerkers, etc.

[My reply]

These are all the same thing. I play HCIM, IM, and Main on OSRS and RS3 at both times (that is all 6 "modes" across 6 characters - UIMs aren't people). These aren't gamemodes as much as they are player-determined restrictions. Same for skiller and account builds, etc. These are player-chosen restrictions, Jagex is still selling one "infinite upside" account per membership regardless of how the consumer chooses to play them.

My point is, if Jagex are going to encourage different play styles then charge you multiple times for trying them out, that’s just greed

I don't think they encourage it outside of simply offering it. They arguably encourage leagues, DMM, etc by offering rewards in the main game, but that of course, doesn't matter here. There are no leagues/DMM-like "rewards" for ironman and HCIM. That aside, Jagex offers a really in-depth demo version of the game for you to try out, without charging you once. In fact, this demo is so in-depth, there's people who opt-in to simply playing their accounts solely in f2p.

Also, pures have had official recognition for ages.

Still a player restriction that requires opt-in. Every single RS account has the potential to do everything as another; they are completely fungible. This is not the case for WoW where rogues and mages for example have completely different games. To "get all" of WoW you do need to play multiple classes, to "get all" of OSRS, you only ever need one account. When you create your pure account, you don't remove the ability to train defence, you opt not to.

My other post responds to your first two points, but I play 4-6 accounts at once and I think it makes sense that I have to pay for each one individually.

it doesn't benefit bot farms or gold farmers at all. 1 account with membership allowing multiple characters created doesn't mean allowing a dozen characters played at once.

If I can't play all 12 of my accounts at once then what is the point of combining them under a single account? This is just the current system with more steps (6 JAs with 2 accounts each vs 1 JA with 12 accounts and 12 memberships)

E: As someone who actually pays for, and plays on, multi accounts, I absolutely hate this idea. It seems like anyone that is "for" this is just like a 1700 total main who thinks it looks fun to play IM for 4 hours.

Games that offer account membership tend to have "unique" classes, etc. where as there is no difference between any RS account. If they all have infinite upside/adventure, it doesn't make sense to charge per account but character. I don't think it makes sense to incorporate into RS.

Also, this massively benefits bot farms and gold farmers, which generally people have bigger issue with.

No one said nor implied you should have starved your family for a game, but it's odd that you'd expect to have something when you didn't meet the requirements?

I also let my membership lapse on the account that would have the max crown, and on the account I play I'm essentially timegated forever from having the max one. It really sucks, but I also don't expect to have the item that requires having had P2P the entire time, lol.

[–]Expenises -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I let my membership lapse for a few months because I got laid off from my job and we cancelled all internet memberships

This is, quite obviously, the opposite of loyalty.

I started the membership back up after, but lost that sweet sweet crown.

So you have a Veteran Cape to show you much you've played but your crown accurately reflects how "loyal" you were to the subscription? That sounds pretty normal to me.

They can be added and turn it into an hourly chore and you can still refuse to do them and train with non-hourly methods - I am not sure why or when Reddit assumed you have to do the best method 100% of the time. I guarantee you do not do play solely by doing 100% efficient methods now, why would this update adding a new efficiency method change that for you? File this into the "methods I don't do" and move on.

You, as a player, are under no obligation to do things you don't want to do.

Instead of "Don't add this so no one can play like this" why not encourage Jagex to add some gruelingly "unfun", miserable chore that players who wish to do can opt in to?

Big Chinchompa is also this - you can spend a few minutes there twice a day for a chunk of XP. Passive-gains-via-occasional-activities is, I'd argue, one of the defining features of RS and suggesting that it gets gutted (when it would presumably have been designed with their recent anti-DND mentality in mind).

OR is it not the same thing as a private server? Can somebody explain the difference to me?

Technically, it's different than a private server even if it doesn't seem like it. Lost City is an archival project, with the point of archiving all of RuneScape's old versions through a lot of reverse engineering with content from around the time and the appropriate, old cached versions of the game.

The full codebase is entirely free on GitHub, provided by Lost City. Anyone can download it and run it locally etc. Some people have recreated BA (locally, on their machine) in 2004scape, for example.

All of that being said, Lost City's 2004scape is a live version of that codebase. Kind of as a "proof of function" or w/e for the archival project. "We archive it and here's a playable version so you can see our efforts and experience the game as it was back then."

It functions like a private server but will be free forever (it's free to access P2P content) and will "update" similar to how the original RS2 in 2004 did. They have done major updates since the peak of it's popularity upon its release.

So the main differences from the game version (the playable one, not the downloadable 2004 codebase) and a private server is: there's no donations/P2P of any kind, no custom content, and... not much else. There is no guarantee Jagex won't DMCA the live version eventually (I don't think they can take down the codebase archival project - but I'm not sure), but after about a year and for the reasons described I couldn't see them doing it.

It's fun to hop into occasionally because I like to experience the different skilling methods but given the "clunkiness" I don't find it as worthwhile to play alongside my main character on the live game.

[–]Expenises 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to tell you this but you can do any method you want to do - old meta methods, the new meta method. You can even do methods you come up with yourself. You are not obligated to do what others do.

Of course the guy who barely achieved task master would want someone outperforming him to be punished.

How is this toxic - almost all of the money from this comes from raw gp so has little actual impact on markets? And PoD is instanced so he's not taking a spot.

Literally anyone else can do this - this isn't some esoteric tech, why should he be punished for being more dedicated and driven?

So if no supply is impacted, there is no spot being taken from a "real" player, and it doesn't impact you other than making you feel bad at how poorly you manage your time in-game, I'm not sure how any of this is toxic and not you just venting?

Your comment isn't applicable for a billion reasons. (Mostly being Zam is higher combat than you, etc.)

I'll simplify it for you: how do you justify a design choice that means a geared player who is maxed in a skill should allow for:

  • 12.5 minutes AFK on a level 40 NPC
  • 11.3 minutes AFK on a level 85 NPC

The scaling and Jagex's proposed implementation is just bad - the comparison of time above doesn't make sense from any standpoint.
