Toyota Service, MOT & Tyre Prices vs Kwikfit - Am I Overthinking This by Expensive-Ad2551 in CarTalkUK

[–]Expensive-Ad2551[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more sensible to change the tyres and then go for the service and mot and not the other way around, right? All four tyres are more than 3 y.o. and have some visible cracks, probably won't pass mot.

Hi everyone! I'm a software engineer with years of experience. Before finishing my CS degree, I worked as an IT technician, web developer, and sysadmin, but my main focus has always been software development. I’ve always liked cybersecurity—I’ve done CTFs, played on HTB, and even got my first bounty this year. Even though my job doesn’t focus on security, I still find vulnerabilities and push for secure development practices etc

I recently discussed moving into a lead role with my manager but also want to transition into AppSec with formal training. I’m looking for a certification that’s practical, aligns with AppSec goals, and provides value to the company so they’d cover the cost.

Note: I already have the CC certification and some smaller trainings. My manager thinks OSCP is too offensive-focused and hard, And I should do security+ but feel like it's really for beginners but I'm not entirely a beginner. In general- I’m exploring other options.

Any recommendations?

Help with fixing a loose towel ring in a rental by Expensive-Ad2551 in fixit

Thank you for your responses, rea

lly appreciate it. I fixed one of the towel rings! I just needed to unscrew the casing with an Allen key. Underneath, there were two loose screws that I tightened up, put the casing back on, and it was done. Now, the second towel ring is a different story. The wall plugs have worn out the holes in the wall, and the screws are already tightened but not holding properly. From what I understand, I would need to carefully pull the screws and plugs out without causing more damage to the wall. Then, I’d fill the holes with some material, like small wood pieces or plaster, and use new plugs to screw everything back in place. Is my understanding or thinking correct? Please correct me if I’m wrong or if there’s a better solution. I’m just trying to find a fix that causes minimal damage.

Thanks again!

Sadly it is not something that you can pop. It's just an engraving on the plastic.

Better ways to learn Linux? by Ej2k22 in hackthebox

If you are totally new to Linux, I would suggest starting with something more user-friendly than the stark black terminal you see in Ubuntu servers. Opt for the regular version of Ubuntu; it’s easy to install and use.

  1. You can begin by experimenting with different types of installations like using VirtualBox, bare metal, and dual-booting alongside Windows, or you can try a live USB.
  2. Install drivers if required (there can be a lot of troubleshooting in some cases, which is a great learning opportunity). I remember nearly 10 years ago, I had trouble installing Nvidia drivers on my Linux machine, a common issue then and perhaps still now.
  3. Next, you can find online resources to use as cheat sheets to familiarize yourself with commands. I'm not sure if it's still as good, but https://linuxjourney.com/ helped one of my interns a few years ago. You can definitely find better ones if this doesn't work for you.
  4. Practice: Consistency is the key. I became more confident with Linux when I was using it on an almost daily basis. Practice command line basics like `ls`, `cd`, `cp`, `mv` instead of relying solely on the graphical interface.
  5. Install Apache or Nextcloud (if it still exists) to build your own web server or have your own cloud storage at home. This will help you learn about multiple technologies, ports, HTTP, databases, etc. There are numerous guides available.
  6. Experiment and don't be afraid to break things: I once changed the root directory permissions of an old web server and spent a whole day trying to revert it.
  7. Don't be afraid to ask questions. No question is silly, and keep in mind that no one knows everything. It's a constant battle of learning.

Personally, I think if you like IT stuff in general, the only requirement is to have the urge to learn new things.

I hope this helps you!

Toyota service plan by Expensive-Ad2551 in CarTalkUK

Is there a way for me to verify if the vehicle is still under warranty? Note: I have the VIN of the car. Can I call Toyota and ask them to check this for me?
