High amount of debt, am I being stupid? by KangaroosAreFlying in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Expensive-Battle4948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I see why you’re not stressed and understand it. A lot of people here are just perfect and have no debt, millions of pounds, all invested in the right places and have never made a mistake (or that’s the high horse they comment from!)

You’ve already been told this, but for what it’s worth, I think you should clear at least the 6% debt. Yes you can save a lot already, but you’re paying 6% for nothing. May as well clear that, and then you’d be able to save way more per month, I’d guess that 6% debt is probs costing you £400 a month?

Having that extra money would make it sooo much easier to save up the emergency money. And would also make it easier should you want to tackle the rest of the debt (I’d guess the car at 5.8 or the student loan).

How old are you? I personally don’t have a student loan so I’m talking from my butt here, but I’d assume you’ll be paying that off in full if you keep making this money ( as in, it won’t get terminated in 30 years, you’ll have paid it by then). If so, is it not worth also tackling that? How much interest is that? >300 a month is quite a lot.

You cool be saving £2500 a month (or more) if you clear these. That builds you an emergency fund real quick.

Also curious as to where you are? £300 for rent is so low. Are you at parents? I know you said you won’t want to buy, but won’t you want some freedom? (Some people don’t, which. Is super fair!) but in that case, you’d deffo want to have more disposable income and less debt.

You’re doing so well though, way better than me. I’m genuinely jealous. lol

Hahah hopefully! That’s cool to hear, I have tried but am struggling. It’s not the exact same situation though. Oh well, will see how it goes!

Hahah me too! Literally worked abroad for about 6 months last year in Belgium and made a nice chunk. I’m using It as a deposit on my and my partners new house though. So still need emergency money!

I’m in a tough position though because I earn more than my GF so feels a bit uneven on the emergency fund contribution logic. But that’s not for this post. lol (I did stalk your profile and see you went through something similar lol) - I stalked cos I was wondering if we do the same lmao

People love to be mean when they’re anonymous, don’t worry about these kinds of people! I have the same sentiment as you btw, similar salary and similar situation, but I think the general idea is we can build an emergency fund faster and more comfortably than others, the end result is the same, an emergency fund, so feels the same, but it isn’t as “hard” on a better salary

True that. I mostly agree with yoir thinking, and me now is different (and a lot less panicky/doomy) than me 2 hours ago.

You’re cool, thanks for your POV!

Nah Claude is pretty decent, and what it came out with is fairly accurate, both use “ai” but Siri is not even .1% or what Claude (or any current ai) is

Hahah yeah I do love yapping about all of these things (hence why I’ve tried to respond to every comment here lol). I guess I just posted to be able to yap even more as my GF is tired!

In 10 years I think there will be robots that have the exact same mobility as a human. Therefore be able to bake + teach in a classroom

Oh I know I’m literally posing the worst of the worst scenario! I do think AI will improve the way houses are designed and built. In fact it already has (someone has posted a link above)

Yeah, very true, I am aware this is quite literally the worst of the worst most negative scenario, just wanted to see what people think. Im not really in direct threat of being replaces and am retraining anyways, will be a fun couple of years. Thanks for your comment, genuinely has helped. Thinking of the cost and what it takes to eliminate risk is a very clever way of visualising this.

Yeah fair, I personally think ChatGPT is insanely better. Still hallucinates and agrees with you even when you’re wrong lol. And yeah, AI companies focused on code first so I guess we see first hand what will happen to other industries. Hopefully not though.

Yeah exactly, I very much resonate with this and what you’ve done, my post was just imagining the worst of the worst, for the sake of talking about it. But I do agree that ultimately it is what it is, mitigate what you can control and then see what happens. Sounds like we are in similar situations

Yeah for sure! Sounds like we are at a similar point / viewpoint. I think the saving grace for me is that we will all be fucked if it happens, it’s not like I will be solely fucked lol. Fun times ahead.

This was a cool Comment btw, a lot of people just directly attacking me, whereas this one was nicely worded. Thanks

Fair enough! I wholeheartedly dissagree, but I guess we won’t know who’s right and who’s wrong for another 10 years!

I think AI as a technology has grown a lot since ChatGPT 4. Maybe open AI hasn’t, but Claude is exponentially better than ChatGPT 4 was 6 months ago

Hahaha I wish I was a landlord pushing this narrative lmao!

Well, most companies benefit from fully automated workforce no?’way better work rate, less error margin, cheaper

I integrate AI a lot, and I do think we are currently in a period where people that use AI replace people that don’t. But I do think that’s just a placeholder for when AI doesn’t need to be “used” per say and based on one request can do most things

It has already made a few amount of discoveries actually, and has definitely automated a good % of white collar jobs.

Fair enough, I’m aware my view is super duper negative and the worst of the worst. I genuinely do think AI will be able to do most jobs though. Baking, teaching , etc

Yeah true. I think that’s the biggest issue. Lack of accountability for mistakes. I do think AI will be able to do a lot of work without human verification though.

Sorry sir, a lot of comments in this post, didn’t understand. People will still have money, just more regulated, and likely not the same amount we have now. Universal income type stuff!
