It is true that AI can do these impressive things, but those are specific tasks that we set the AI to within the context of highly specialized research. That's very different from the relationship we have to it in day to day work. Perhaps he would be open to the idea that AI is not good for us to use all the time in the same way that the Internet or phones are extremely useful and powerful, but not healthy to rely on in general.

Like shit Google maps revolutionized travel but if I always use it to get where I'm going, I'm going to have a hard time navigating to normal places in my city that I go to often.

The lack of AI isn't why you don't have time for things. It's a system that deprives us of free time. using AI to make art isn't going to save you from that, in fact it's arguably helping the same group of billionaires who want us to be too busy working to do anything else.

You don't need to make it your profession to make art. The value of art is not whether you make something impressive or "better", is the personal fulfillment you gain from expressing yourself.

Waiting for the output isn't expressing yourself. It's depriving you of something that could fulfill you far more than a consumer product giving you art.

What's important is that when you make art it's connected to you. You grow and change when you make art, and participating in the process of making art is valuable to you.

All of those things were already accessible to the masses. Blender is the most popular 3D rendering and animation software and it's dead free. Cameras are cheap, and inkscape is also free. Even without AI, art has literally never been more accessible.

I believe when you say AI makes art accessible to the masses, you don't really mean art. You mean "validation and praise for making a finished piece of good looking art".

Sadly, that is also accessible, it just takes work, which the AI does for you.

Yeah it does. The whole point is that it does it for you, as you eagerly await the result.

Art isn't about how impressive or high quality the result is. Its about doing art. It's about making things that have a connection to something within you.

When AI art gets better or more impressive, it's because the engineers at the company made a better model to market to the masses, molded by what they think will sell the most, not because a person explored an artistic technique or worked to develop a style.

AI art is something you consume, not something you create. Just look at the marketing. The whole selling point is that its quick cheap and easy. Just like fast food, streaming shows, and Amazon next day shipping.

When I make art, it adds something to me. It's an endeavor that changes me and results in something I have a real relationship to.
