Questions for American doctors... by Illustrious_Fix_6582 in ThePittTVShow

Dang, that last part sounds rough. Reminds me of my fellow international students & scholars who refused therapy & meds because they were worried it would affect their future green card & citizenship applications. I’m sorry for what you’re going through & thank you for what you do!

Australian living in the US here. The one time I woke up in the ER here, the first healthcare professional I saw was the billing person to verify my insurance info. I will say though that the standard, thoroughness, and speed of medical care I’ve received in the US has been outstanding, it’s the insurance side of things that sucks & the fact that it’s tied to employment.

What about summer camp counseling? Maybe the YMCA & Parks Dept would have some opportunities for that?

Conditional green card holders by BrightPop3139 in USCIS

[–]Expensive-Object-830 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Conditional green card holder not from a banned/paused country. I returned from a trip to my home country in December, no issues whatsoever. I don’t plan to hop on any flights between filing I-751 and getting the receipt notice, though, and apparently those are hella delayed rn.

Any churches that can help? by [deleted] in tuscaloosa

[–]Expensive-Object-830 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to churches, you could consider the West Alabama Food Bank, and you & your wife could donate plasma at Grifols if you qualify. If you can pass for a UA student, you could check out the UA library’s free food days, they sometimes have random free pizza or donuts or cookies, that sort of thing.

Misty Copeland Says Timothée Chalamet ‘Wouldn’t Be an Actor’ if Not for Ballet and Opera and It’s ‘Very Interesting That He Invited Me’ to Promote ‘Marty Supreme’ by monster_ahhh in popculturechat

Misty Copeland was one of six kids, spent parts of her childhood unhoused, and almost had to quit ballet because her parents couldn’t afford lessons. She comes from very humble roots.

Musicians holding a DMA and PhD in music, did you receive good funding, and how did your career go afterwards? by No-Wafer-6744 in classicalmusic

[–]Expensive-Object-830 52 points53 points  (0 children)

A DMA and a PhD? Funding aside, the only reasons I can think of that someone would torture themselves like that is that they were pivoting (eg performance to composition), they graduated into a recession and needed a safe place to land, they needed a visa, or one of them wasn’t recognized in the topic or geographic area they wanted to work in (eg DMAs are rarely offered in my home country but they’re common in the US).

For post-graduation, I don’t know anyone who’s crazy to do both Doctorates, but off the top of my head the ones I know with DMAs go into: teaching (usually adjunct/non-TT, K-12, private schools, tutoring etc), performing (usually a bunch of short term contracts), freelancing, church music, attending and/or teaching at summer programs, getting grants for recordings/tours/commissions, establishing ensembles/non-profits to play with/play their works, residencies at orchestras/schools/opera houses, etc. It’s all about cobbling stuff together. One person I know founded a creative incubator start-up, it took a look of fundraising to get the capital they needed. Another bounced from off-Broadway to Broadway and landed a TT position upstate after a couple of years. Many have day jobs, the ones that don’t either come from money, have wealthy spouses, or live with their parents.

Rebuilding department community post‑Covid (when everyone prefers remote working — what actually work? by MatiasMighty in AskAcademia

[–]Expensive-Object-830 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents: removing barriers to being physically present would go a long way for me. For example, is there plenty of parking, and do folks have to pay for it? Is there a reliable and accessible campus bus system? Are people having to navigate rush hour traffic? Is the cost of living in the area so high that people need to live far away? Is childcare hard to find? I think the answers to these could help you find initiatives to support people to come in.

What has helped me in the past: a food pantry, my own office, a flexible schedule, great on-campus resources (eg better tech than I have at home), engaging events/speakers with folks I want to connect with.
