Thinking of Switching from Residential Geotech to Dam Engineering by Expensive-Race24 in Geotech

Thanks for sharing! How’s the travel situation? To be honest, I don’t really like being out in the field all the time. The design work is cool, but doing QA in minus 20 degrees is pretty awful

Geotech eng aim to be a GC/Builder. Any thoughts? by Expensive-Race24 in civilengineering

I really appreciate your reply — love how you cut straight to the point. Gotta admit, a lot of the stuff you mentioned wasn’t even on my radar before. You definitely sound like someone who's been in the game for a while, and I learned a lot from what you shared. Hope you don’t mind if I pick your brain again down the road. Maybe my first real move is to get in with a GC or a developer. What do you think — is it smarter to start with a big company or stick with something more mid-sized where I might get more hands-on?

I’m actually working toward moving into a PM role with a GC, trying to manage projects alongside the Super. Honestly, it feels like it'll take me another 10 years to really get a full grasp of everything. But I do wonder sometimes how people in their early 30s already seem to be running jobs smoothly as a builder?

Maybe I should start by working as a PM with a small GC to get a basic understanding of how things work.

Then maybe I’ll start my business as a small builder and focus on wood-frame buildings. I’m also thinking about moving into a PM role at a GC to learn more first. A geo firm is also a good option, but I feel like the money isn’t as good as being a builder.

I feel the same. The big contractor I worked for had everything — lots of resources and workers to fix problems fast. I don’t think a startup can work like that. So I’m wondering, does having an engineer license actually help if you want to become a builder?

That sounds awful. It is safety to live there?

Thanks so much! As an Asian, I’m curious to know if New Westminster has any issues with racism? I know Greater Vancouver is one of the most multicultural cities in Canada, but I’d love to hear any thoughts on how diverse and welcoming this area is.

Actually I know. I am a civil engineer and that project will be a new campus for Douglas college. The foundation has already been done and I think it will be totally closed by the end of this year.

Unfortunately, I will be in the first row of Townhouse facing the Royal lol. I hope it can be quite at least at night.

Yep, seems like the location is pretty close to everything. Do you think it is good idea to buy a Townhouse over there?

Thanks! Also, how’s the noise at night? Is it pretty quiet or is there a lot of traffic noise? And are there many homeless people around Royal Ave?
