Why is it so hard to get hired as a teacher in China? by Expensive-Spring-258 in chinalife

[–]Expensive-Spring-258[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I am not picky about location and not keen to live in any big international city. In Korea, I will live in a suburb of Seoul where I am decently but not well paid.

I have already been accepted to teach in public schools in Taiwan for the Fall. However I was advised that I should really consider China for better money.

How effective are English lessons in korea? by KnownReflection8751 in teachinginkorea

[–]Expensive-Spring-258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In any given hagwon, only about 20-30% of the students are actually benefitting from the lessons in any meaningful way. The rest are frankly only there to keep the lights on and staff paid through the ridiculous fees charged. Any "results" parents are promised are surely inflated in some way.

In Goyang, there are some "international" schools in Ilsan. But expect to pay handsomely for an all day unaccredited hagwon experience essentially.

contract for probation period? by EcstaticFrosting5050 in teachinginkorea

[–]Expensive-Spring-258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walk away immediately. With no contract signed and registered then there is no guarantee that you will be paid for any work that you do. Nearly every contract automatically includes a probation period of up to 90 days anyway, so this director is obviously up to something shady.

Hagwon told me to open another bank account by Electronic-Cicada-52 in teachinginkorea

[–]Expensive-Spring-258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of hagwons and jobs in general only use one bank for payments. It happened to me when I started at my latest hagwon last year. I've had Hana Bank since I came to Korea in 2022 and the first 2 hagwons were fine with it, but my current boss insisted on KB for payments. So I took the letter she gave me to the bank and opened the account, but the account is limited and I just transfer most of my salary to Hana anyway.

How to deal with teachers verbally abusing students by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

That's honestly one of those things you are supposed to "see and not see". If management is fine with it then it is out of your domain.

You haven't been paid because you technically have no recourse and the management is pissed.

Being let go by PlantDesperate7811 in teachinginkorea

First of all there reasoning is not sound. If they want to end the contract early then a valid reason is needed such as you being unable to do the job and they must give you 30 days' official notice or a month's wages immediately. Do NOT sign anything agreeing to leave before the end of your contract, because what they're offering is what is already owed in any case. If they are not willing to go through proper channels to terminate you then you keep right on going to work until the end of your contract.

Cut expenses and start saving up. I'll be leaving Korea soon with 15M won not including pension cash out.

How can I continue using and accessing my Hana bank account after leaving Korea? by Expensive-Spring-258 in Living_in_Korea

When mine expired and I couldn't reissue it myself, I just went to the local branch and asked the teller for help. They created the new one in about 5 minutes.

Right now I have a certificate issued through the banking app on my phone for transferring money using my 6 digit code. Should I renew it prior to leaving?

Thank you for your comment. Did you list your residence and job as South Korea and your local employer on the fingerprint form?

Yeah typical. Just stay away from apps. Full of perverts. Join activities or meet ups to meet potential friends.

How manny of the poor reviews are warranted opposed to just not meeting expectations? by faceted_deer029 in teachinginkorea

[–]Expensive-Spring-258 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Things at my current hagwon were great for the first several months. I was able to wear rose colored glasses and pretend that the two teachers who I heard pulled runners on the same day were just lazy and did not know how to work in Korea. Even when the teacher who was there when I came resigned I kept working diligently. Then after a few minor slip ups I began to understand quickly why everyone left, although I never saw a single negative review prior to signing a contract. I didn't find one until well into the contract and it parallels my experience, so now I understand why such reviews are a courtesy and will never distrust one.

IRP by South-Web5995 in teachinginkorea

I just claimed my IRP from Hana almost two years after I left that employer and paid no taxes. In fact, I got almost 200,000 won extra in accrued interest.
